Gladys Atkinson

Gladys H. Atkinson, 82, Chattanooga, died Sunday, March 9, 2008, in a local health care facility.

She was a native of Fincastle, Va., moving here from Cartersville, Ga., five years ago. Mrs. Atkinson was a member of First Congregational Methodist Church in Cartersville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Atkinson; a son, Darryl Atkinson; and sisters, Kathryn Schmitt and Dreama Pogue.

Survivors are sons, L.W. Atkinson Jr., Bryant, Ala., Gerald W. (Diane) Atkinson, Red Bank, John D. (Sandra) Atkinson, White, Ga.; daughters, Gladys (Sissie) Ware, Rossville, Diane A. (David) Smith, Red Bank, and Deborah K. (Gary) Payne, Tiftonia; sisters, Eunice Howell, Dublin, Va., Margaret Birch, Manassas, Va.; 13 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a special friend, Claude Loveless.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Cartersville with the Rev. Wayne Rice officiating.

Leon Bowman

Leon "L.C." Bowman, 77, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, March 10, 2008, at the home of his son.

He was born in Catoosa Co., Ga. on July 26, 1930, but lived most of his life in East Brainerd, Chattanooga. He worked for DuPont for 33 years until retirement in 1985. He served in both the U.S. Army and Navy. He was a lifetime believer in the Church of Christ faith. He was a member of East Ridge Church of Christ at death. He was a faithful and active worker for the Lord and was an active minister of many small churches around the Tennessee and Georgia community's, over the last 40 years, his love for the Lord's work was endless. He was a steadfast defender of his belief's and taught to all who would listen. He dearly loved to fish and hunt. He was a member and past president of the Chattanooga Shoot to Retrieve Club and Cohutta Beagle Club. His participation in field trials and participation as a field judge was a delight.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Barber Bowman; parents, Herbert T. Bowman and Otelia Clifton Bowman; brother, Marion "Buddy" Bowman; sister, Juanita Bowman Morris.

Survivors are his son, Jerry (Judy) Bowman; daughters, Diane (Jay) Thomas, Paula (Allen) Edge, Linda Edge Coleman; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Beverly (Raymond) Stakey, Joanna Sparks; brother, Troy E. Bowman all of Chattanooga; brother, James (Julie) Bowman; and sister-in-law, Betty Waters Bowman, of Acworth, Ga.; and loving companion, Dipple Wheeler. Numerous beloved nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 12, 2008, at 3 p.m. at East Ridge Church of Christ with Minister Charles Cochran officiating.

Interment will follow in Lakewood Memory Gardens, South.

The family will receive friends today from 4-8 p.m. and Wednesday from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family also will receive friends at the church from 2 p.m. until the hour of services Wednesday.

William Bradford Jr.

William F. Bradford Jr., 82, fortified with the sacraments of Holy Mother Church passed away on Saturday, March 8, 2008, at a local hospital after a lengthy illness.

A resident of Elder Mountain, Mr. Bradford was a native of Boston, Mass., and resided in St. Louis, Mo. for 17 years before moving to Chattanooga. He was the CEO of TAG Distributors Corp. a local candy and tobacco distributor, for over 26 years before his retirement.

He served in World War II for four years with the U.S. Coast Guard as a signalman 3rd class. He was aboard the USS Spencer Coast Guard cutter in the Mediterranean, North Atlantic and South Pacific oceans. He was a very active member of the USS Spencer Association.

After the war, he played semi-professional baseball and was an outstanding first baseman with the Lebanon cardinals, Lebanon, N.H., of the Northern League.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 44 years, Mary Sharry Bradford. He was the son of the late William F. Bradford Sr. and Katharine Harrington Bradford.

Survivors include his children, Mary Bradford Molina, William F. (Rose) Bradford III, Lucy Jepson-Turner and James M. (Debbie) Bradford; a brother, David H. Bradford, of Cape Cod, Mass.; a sister, Priscilla B. Cronin, of Westwood, Mass.; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be at Wann Funeral Home, 4000 Tennessee Ave. today, March 11, 2008, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

A funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, March 12, 2008, at 10 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 214 E. Eighth St.

Interment will be immediately following the Mass at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Catholic Charities.

Edward Caldwell

Edward N. Caldwell, 65, of Hixson, died on Sunday March 9, 2008, at his home with his loving family and friends at his side.

He was a man of many words who never met anyone that didn't love him. He will be deeply missed and remembered for the kindness he showed to everyone he met. Ed was retired from Chattanooga Bakery where he worked for 23 years. He was a member of New Vision Worship Center where he sang specials and was a blessing to everyone.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gillis and Ollie Mae Fultz Caldwell; brothers, Dewey, Bulis and Clyde Caldwell.

Survivors include his loving and adored wife, Carolyn A. Caldwell; sons, Parley Edward (Delois) Caldwell, Tuscaloosa, AL, Markay Caldwell, Dalton, GA; daughters, Ramona (Tony) Quarles, Hixson, Missy (Kelly) Simmons, Soddy-Daisy; grandchildren, Jade, Tyler, Kayla, Corey, Emily, Amy (Luke), Chris (Heidi), Joshua, Justin and Jeremy; brothers, Farley (Barbara Sue), Cecil, Paul (Mary Ann), Danny (Ann), Charles, all of Bledsoe, Ky., Glen (Sue), Casey County, Ky.; sisters, Anne Clow, Monticello, IL, Euretha Branton, Mesquite, Texas and Mae Jean Cox, Lakewood, Colo.; sister-in-law, Evelyn Caldwell, Eolia, Ky.; a host of neices and nephews.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at New Vision Worship Center on Ely Road with Pastor Jerry Yother and Brother Darrell Turner officiating.

Paul Cooper

Paul Duncan Cooper, 93, passed away in his sleep Saturday, March 8, 2008, at his home.

Paul was a retired chemical engineer with DuPont and a member of Northside Presbyterian Church. He will long be remembered for his many acts of kindness and generosity with Northside Neighborhood House, Erlanger Hospital, Northside Church and Day Care and Signal Centers of Chattanooga. He was a master Mason, served in the Army during World War II in England. He was a graduate of Ohio State University. He was the firstst Eagle Scout inducted in Piqua, Ohio. He was winner of the Jefferson Award and the Community Service Award of the Junior League of Chattanooga.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Trowbridge Cooper; daughters, Virginia Ruth and Margaret Goe Pogue; parents, Alfred W. and Ruth Pearson Cooper; brothers, Elmo, Arthur, Benjamin, Warren, Robert E., Ned; and sister, Imogene Anderson.

He leaves behind sons and daughters-in-law, Paul Daniel and Marleitta Cooper, of Maryville; Peter T. and Linda Cooper, of Chattanooga; sister, Ruth Petersime, of Syndey, Ohio; and brother, Martin Jay Cooper, of Indiatlantic, Fla.; special friend, Ruth Credelle; grandchildren, Emily Cooper, of Dalton, Ga.; Ben and Christy Cooper, Brian D. Cooper, Katie and Matt Harbison, Elizabeth and Kevin Blasbery, Christopher Cooper; and great-grandchildren, Rowe and Lane Cooper, all of Chattanooga.

Rudolph Ervin

Rudolph Ervin formerly of Chattanooga died Sunday, March 2, 2008, in Fair Oaks, Calif.

Survived by wife, Lillian of 58 years. He was the son of the late Betty Ervin and nephew of the late Rev. William M. Pride.

Ruth Gaddy

Ruth Gaddy, a longtime resident of Signal Mountain, passed away on Saturday, March 8, 2008, after a short illness.

She was an active member of Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church. Ruth was an avid and skilled bridge player and dearly loved her playing partners and friends. She was a past member of Signal Mountain Garden Club and created beautiful arrangements for her church and her home.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 65 years, Dick Gaddy; and her sister, Ernestine Kingsolver Grimes.

She leaves behind daughter, Gloria Gaddy, of Duluth, Ga.; son, Ben Gaddy, of Red Bank; and daughter, Mrs. Carol (Tim) Burns, of Signal Mountain; grandchildren, Mrs. Jenna (Jason) Gardner, of Atlanta, Ashley Burns, of Chattanooga and Kyle Burns, of Signal Mountain; brother, Kyle Kingsolver, of Tryon, N.C.; sister, Gladys Hart of Greensboro, N.C.; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church, 612 James Blvd, Signal Mountain, with Dr. Bill Dudley officiating.

Burial will follow in Chattanooga Memorial Park.

Robert Jones III

Robert Cannon Jones III passed away quietly at his home Sunday, March 9, 2008. He was 82.

"Bobby" was born Feb. 6, 1926 and was a lifelong native of Chattanooga. He was educated at the Bright School, the McCallie School and Duke University, afterwards serving in the U.S. Navy in World War II.

He was a man of deep faith who was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon for many years. He was also a member of the Lookout Mountain Golf Club, the Fairyland Club and the Honors Course. He served on the board of directors of Coca-Cola Bottling Company United, Suntrust Bank, the McCallie School, Boys Club of Chattanooga, the YMCA and Southern Products. He was active in the food brokerage business with first his father and then his son.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Cannon Jones Jr. and his mother, Elizabeth Howell Jones.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret "Peggy" Probasco Jones, of Lookout Mountain; one sister, Emily Jones McCabe, also of Lookout Mountain; three sons, Robert Cannon Jones IV, Thomas Howell (Lolly) Jones, and Walker Livingston (Elizabeth) Jones, all of Lookout Mountain; one daughter, Margaret Jones (Scott) Smith.

He was affectionately known as "GrandBobby" to his 10 grandchildren, Cannon Jones, Marian Jones, Catherine Jones, Laura Jones, Allison Jones, Elizabeth Jones, Nevin Jones, Walker Jones, Bobby Jones and Mary Wilkin Smith.

Visitation will be at First Presbyterian Church in the Connector today, March 11, from 1-2:30 p.m.

Graveside services to follow at 3 p.m. at Forest Hills Cemetery with Ben Haden officiating.

Audrey Crowe Lasley, of Chattanooga, formerly of Kingston, Tenn., died Saturday, March 8, 2008.

She was of the Baptist faith.

Doshia Maybelle Martin, 99, of Chattanooga, passed away on Monday, March 10, 2008, at a local nursing home.

She was born in McMinnville, Tenn., to Frank and Effie Locke and was a member of Greens Lake Road Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her husband, D. C. Martin; brother, Robert Jackson Locke; and sisters, Alma Womack, Laura Green and Thelma Roller.

Jennie McGaha

Jennie Elizabeth Holmes McGaha, 82, of Hixson, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and sister, passed away on Sunday, March 9, 2008.

Jennie was born on Feb. 1, 1926, in McRoberts, Ky., to William and Della Holmes. She grew up in Dayton, Tenn., and lived most of her married life in the Tennessee Valley. Mrs. McGaha was an active member of Red Bank Baptist Church and the Hope Sunday School Class.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Columbus A. McGaha.

Jennie is survived by her daughters, Pamela (Ricky) Rector and Paula (Steve) Cowart; grandchildren, Matthew Rector, Betsy Parks, Jennifer Cowart, Stephanie Cowart; a sister, Noleeka Millard; brothers, Don and Malcolm Holmes; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home chapel with Dr. Fred Steelman and the Rev. Bert Jones officiating.

Johnny Miller

John Will "Johnny" Miller departed this life March 8, 2008.

He was born Sept. 20, 1926 in Huntsville Ala., Madison County to late Rosetta Steward and Albert Miller.

John W. Miller worked at Chattanooga Bakery and retired after 25 years of service.

He was a God fearing man who was known for his kind spirit and commitment to his family and friends, he always gave unselfishly to others and will be dearly missed by many.

John was happily married to Louise C. Miller for 28 years until his death. He left behind two children, Tameisa Miller, Francesa Miller; and granddaughter, Kani Miller; sisters, Callie Sue Chapman Dorothy Miller, of New York and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins, other relative and friends; longtime best friends, Eddie Harrison and Frank Johnson.

Graveside 1 p.m. Wednesday March 12, at National Cemetery.

Jonas Richardson Sr.

Jonas Charles Richardson Sr., 63, of Chattanooga, passed away Friday, March 7, 2008, in a local hospital.

He was retired from Chattanooga Gas Co. He was a member of Orchard Knob MissionaryBaptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jonas Wilkins and Florine Edwards; brother, Benjamin Wilkins.

Survivors include sons, Jonas (Donna) Richardson Jr. and Anthony (Nary) Richardson; daughters, Jacqueline and Patricia Richardson; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brothers, Lebron, Kelvin, James and John (Ruby) Wilkins; sisters, Willie Pearl Chalk, Anita (Larry) Phoenix, Carolyn Sledge, Geraldine and Mary Ann Edwards; very devoted friend, Vera Davis; a host of nieces; nephews; cousins; other relatives and friends.

Allen Roberts

Allen Roberts, 38, passed away Friday, March 7, 2008, in a local hospital.

Allen was predeceased in death by his parents, William and Barbara Roberts. He was an employee of the Chattanooga Aquarium.

Allen is survived by an aunt, Mrs. Louise Bain, in Oxford, Ala.; and an uncle, Joseph Pointer.

Visitation will be today, March 11, 2008, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Bryan Funeral Home.

Alma Schmitt

Alma Schmitt, 83, of Chattanooga, died Sunday, March 9, 2008, at Parkridge Hospital.

She was born in Chattanooga and was the daughter of the late Herbert and Viola Campbell Smith and also preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Smith.

She was of the Baptist faith, retired from Pacific Bell (now AT&T) and was a long-time volunteer at Parkridge Hospital. She was past Worthy Matron of the Chattanooga-Harrison OES 56, Past High Priestess of Asebi Court 36 and member of the Helping Hands.

She is survived by three brothers and sisters-in-law, Willard and Fay Smith, Grandbury, Texas; Wallace and Anita Smith, Chattanooga and James and Barbara Smith, Erwin; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Coulter Chapel with the Rev. Tommy Messer officiating.

David Blaine Strutton, 46, of East Ridge, passed away Monday, March 10, 2008, at his residence.

David was a member of Good Shepherd Luthern Church, recently he attended Brainerd Baptist Church. He was an employee of SCH Engineering Co. with 18 years of service. He was a graduate of Kirkman Technical High School in 1979. David was a wonderful and devoted husband, dad and friend to all, with a special ability to make those around him laugh regardless of the situation.

He was an avid Tennessee Vols, Tennessee Titan's and NASCAR fan.

He was preceded in death by grandparents, Charles and Ida Alton; grandfather, Alonzo Strutton; uncle, Clyde "Huey" Alton.

Carolyn Womack

Emily "Carolyn" Womack, 77, of Chattanooga went to be with her Lord on Sunday, March 9, 2008, from a local hospital.

She was a member of Bartlebaugh Baptist Church.

Carolyn graduated from the Erlanger School of Nursing and went on to retire as a nurse working for several doctors offices in and around the Chattanooga area.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Crit C. Womack Jr.; father and mother, Thomas and Mattie Wallace; two sisters and one brother.

She is survived by her children, Steve Womack, Tim (Pam) Womack, Gail (Alan) Houts and Beth Higgins; five grandchildren, Rob and Andrew Womack, Becca Houts, Sarah Ford and Nikki Lucas; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at 11 a.m. at Bartlebaugh Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Ferguson officiating.

Interment will follow in Lakewood Memory Garden, East.

JASPER -- Donald Ray "Don" Hargis, 50, passed away Sunday, March 9, 2008.

He was employed by Beaulieu and was a brick mason.

He was preceded by parents, William "Bill" and Hazel Coffman Hargis; siblings, Robert and Edna Mae.

He is survived by his wife, Suzanne Hargis; sons, Matthew Meeks and Chris Meeks; daughters, Michelle (James) Coffelt, Stacy Hargis (Ronald) Kelso, Latasha (Brian) Webb, Brittany Hargis, and Madonna Morrison; siblings, John (Wanda) Hargis, Bill (Lisa) Hargis, George (Polly) Hargis, Roy (Linda) Hargis, Ann (Rabon) Higgins and Mary (Mike) Simmons; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Internment will be in Sequatchie Valley Memorial Gardens.

Funeral services will be conducted from the funeral home chapel, Thursday, March 13, 2008 at 2 p.m. CDT with Brother Aaron Britt officiating.

WHITWELL -- L.D. "Cheese" Hickman passed away Sunday, March 9, 2008, in a local hospital.

Mr. Hickman was the former owner of K&H Trailer Repair.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lois Hickman; and step-father, Bill Davis; one brother, Arlen Hickman; and one sister, Dorothy DeNoyes.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Hickman; his mother, Carrie Mae "Doll" Davis, of Whiteside; one son, Stacy (Tammy) Hickman, Whitwell; one daughter, Sherry (Joe) Spangler, of Whiteside; three grandchildren, Andrew, Sydney and Carrie; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be conducted at Lakewood Memory Gardens, West, in Chattanooga, Wednesday, March 12, at noon CDT with Brother William Gouger officiating.

Pallbearers will be Bruce Prince, Michael Prince, Allen Rogers, Chester Huff, Nathan DeNoyes, Donnie York, Bobby Tuders and Travis Watson Jr.

JASPER -- Lois Parker Leiderman, 83, went to be with the Lord, Sunday, March 9, 2008.

She was of the Church of God faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, K.D. and Ethel Rankin Parker; sisters, Gertrud Mont, Juanita Peardon; and brother, K.D. "Bud" Parker Jr.

She leaves behind to cherish her memories, her husband of 69 years, Luther M. Leiderman; one daughter, Nancy (Aaron) Layne, of Jasper; two grandchildren, Aaron M. (Scarlett) Layne, of Manning, S.C. and Tammy (Todd) Lankes, of Lebanon, Tenn.; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lena Graves and Betty Ford of Jasper and one brother, Wesley (Jimmy) Parker, of Chattanooga; several nieces and nephews; an aunt, Mildred Thomas, of Jasper; and a special friend, Mary Allen Long, of Whitwell.

Funeral services will be conducted from the funeral home chapel at 11 a.m. CDT Thursday, March 13, 2008, with Rev. Quillen Thurman and Rev. Billy Rankin officiating.

Tommy Farr

ROSSVILLE -- Tommy Joe Farr, 63, passed away Sunday, March 9, 2008 at a local hospital.

He was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga and North Georgia area where he was a member of East Ridge Christian Church. Mr. Farr was retired from Farr Cars of Dalton, Ga., which was owned and operated by his family for over 50 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Theresa Farr; son, Michael Lane Farr; and grandson, Cameron Moss-Farr.

Survivors include his wife, Sherri Sneed Farr; daughter, Rhonda Lynn (Terry) Massey, of Rossville; son, Joseph D. Farr, of Kentucky; stepson, Zachary Cain Cline, of Dalton; grandchildren, Terry Chase Massey, Jada Lynn Massey, Michael Joseph Farr, Memorie Farr and Mackenzie Farr.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Hershel Watkins, three brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include two daughters and son-in-law, Laura Agnes and Richard Purcell, of Rock Spring, and Brenda Hendrix, of Rossville; two sons and daughter-in-law, Bill and Diane Watkins, of LaFayette, and Roger Watkins, of Kensington; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; special friend, Jean Smith, special nephew and spouse, Wallace and Rena Faye Hensley, and several nieces and nephews.
