Attorney’s surgery delays federal murder trial

by Brian Lazenby

Health problems have forced an attorney representing a man accused of kidnapping and killing an Atlanta restaurant owner to request a delay in the federal murder trial here.

According to court records, Bill Ortwein, who represents Rejon Taylor, recently underwent back surgery and said he will not be able to try the case in April.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Chris Poole said prosecutors will not oppose a delay.

Mr. Taylor was one of three Atlanta men accused of kidnapping Violette restaurant owner Guy Luck on Aug. 6, 2003, and killing him in Collegedale when he tried to overtake his attackers.

Co-defendants Sir Jack Mathews and Joey Marshall pleaded guilty Nov. 16, 2006.

Mr. Taylor also is charged with masterminding an unsuccessful jail escape on April 14, 2007.
