Savoy Adamson

Savoy Henton Adamson passed away at age 83 on Tuesday, March 11, 2008, in Marietta, after a long illness.

Mr. Adamson was a native of west Georgia, and had a long career in Chattanooga including 13 years at McCallie School as head Varsity Golf Coach, advisor to the Astronomy club and mathematics teacher; as well as over 20 years at Chattanooga State Community College as a mathematics professor. He also taught mathematics for three years at Maysville Community College in Maysville, Ky.

He served in the U.S. Navy V12 program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, graduated from Georgia Tech with a degree in industrial engineering, received his Masters Degree from UTC and a bachelors of divinity from S.E. Baptist Seminary at Temple University. He served as Elder at Central Presbyterian Church and was a member of Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church. A noted author, genealogist, and a fantastic dancer, Mr. Adamson enjoyed all that life has to offer.

Mr. Adamson was predeceased by his parents, Henton Adamson, Mona Styles Adamson; and daughter, Sharon Styles Adamson Nevin, as well as brothers, Dr. C.L. Adamson and Styles Adamson.

He is survived by his former wife of 33 years, Charlene Brown Adamson, and first wife, Jacquelyn Yearwood Adamson Stone; brother, Willis "Bill" Adamson; children, Scott Adamson, Kenneth Ward Adamson, Benjamin Henton Adamson; stepchildren Elizabeth Duty Miller and Dr. Jack Douglas Duty; their spouses. nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Memorial services will be held Saturday. March 15, 2008, at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Rainwater Funeral Home in Bowdon, Ga.

In lieu of flowers, contributions are requested to be made in his name at Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church, Signal Mountain or the McCallie School, Chattanooga.

Almeda H. Ashford, 85, of Chattanooga, passed on Thursday, March 13, 2008, at a local health care facility.

Charlotte Campbell

Charlotte B. "Sug" Campbell, 83, died on Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at Parkridge Hospital.

Charlotte lived most of her life in Chattanooga. She and her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Rome R. Benedict Sr., were founding members of Brainerd United Methodist Church.

Inspired by a period spent in the Wyoming wilderness, Charlotte held a lifelong love of animals, especially the bears of North America, and was a teddy bear aficionada.

She is survived by her son, Alan Gary Campbell, also of Chattanooga, and her nieces and nephews.

An informal visitation will be held in the Truman Brooks Room of Brainerd United Methodist Church on Brainerd Road, Saturday, March 15, from 1 to 3 p.m. followed by a private graveside service.

Flowers may be sent to the church.

Mayble Davidson

Mayble Kelon Davidson, 87, of Hixson passed away Wednesday, March 12, 2008, in an area health care facility.

She was a member of Dallas Bay Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Glynn Davidson; daughter, Susanne Rawaillot; and great-grandson, Taylor Gage Emery.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and Terry Emery, of Hixson; son and daughter-in-law, Franklin and Barbara Davidson, of Darien, Ill.; sister, Reba Moore, of Bradford, Tenn.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 15, 2008, in the funeral home chapel with Dr. David McNabb officiating.

Interment will follow in Hamilton County Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. until time of the service on Saturday at the funeral home.

Johnny Gibbs

Johnny Gibbs, 73, of Chattanooga, passed away Saturday, March 8, 2008, at a local hospital.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Horace and Susie Gibbs.

He was a member of New Zion Baptist Church. A member of Elks Armistic Lodge 440 IBPOEW of Chattanooga. He retired from Carta Bus Co. after a number of years of service also employed by Mr. Joseph H. Davenport and Mr. Scott Probasco for several years.

Survivors include: one devoted sister, Lucille Gibbs Tooks, of Chattanooga; one sister-in-law, Clara Gibbs, of Chicago, Ill.; devoted nieces, Linda Benford and Iantla J. (Bobby) Moore, Janice Gibbs, Shirley Ryals, Gilda Scott, Maxine (Sims) Davis, all of Chattanooga; several other nieces, Deborah Scott, of California; nephews, William Lewis Gibbs Jr., of Chicago, Arthur (Linda) Tooks, of Toledo, Ohio, Michael (Sarah) Tooks, Gary (Linda Faye) Tooks, Mardia Tooks, Morris Tooks, William (Margaret) Scott III, all of Chattanooga, Larry (Brenda) Scott, of Nashville; several great-nieces and great-nephews; one son, Tyrone Garner, of Chattanooga; one daughter, Angela (Tracy) Milliner, of Texas; three grandchildren; and host of other relatives anbd friends.

Funeral services will be at noon Saturday March 15, at New Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Allen officiating.

The body will lie in state today at McCallie Avenue Chapel.

Julia Gladney

Julia Josephine Bork Gladney, 85, died peacefully in her sleep early Wednesday morning, March 12, 2008, in Chattanooga.

Julia was born in Chattanooga May 13, 1922. She was a 1941 graduate of Notre Dame School. In the summer of 1941 she married Thomas Harold Gladney. They lived in various cities in the Tennessee Valley as necessitated by his position with TVA before establishing permanent residence in Chattanooga in 1958 with their five children.

Julia volunteered her work in support of St. Jude Catholic Church and School. She was active in the religious education program of the parish, helping to raise funds, cleaning the church sanctuary, working with the Ladies of Charity, visiting the sick and homebound, and wherever else her assistance was needed.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Harold Gladney; a son, James Gladney; her parents, Edward Louis Bork and Pearl Devaney Bork; five siblings, Mary Jessie, Martha Stagmaier, Edward Bork, Catherine Bork, and John Bork.

Survivors include four children, Gail Cooper (Farrell), Signal Mountain, Thomas Gladney (Donna), Crestwood, Ky., Ronald Gladney (Laura), Hixson, Cheryl Lehman (Edwin), Louisville, Tenn.; and a daughter-in-law, Joan Gladney, Alachua, Fla. Also surviving her are 15 grandchildren, Kathryn Corley (Jack), Jeanne Manley (David), Laura Reed (Steve), Christopher Cooper, Jeffrey Gladney, Timothy Gladney (Amanda), David Gladney, Stephanie Queen (Chad), Shaun Gladney (Jennifer), Scott Gladney (Becky), Leslie Gladney, Christopher Lehman, Amy Lehman, Kathryn Lehman, Kelly Lehman; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Julia's grandsons will serve her as pall bearers.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Church or to a charity of choice.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today, March 14 with a short prayer service being observed at 4 p.m. at the funeral home.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Jude Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 15.

Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Tanya Grandberry

Tanya Woods Grandberry, 41, of Chattanooga, passed away Monday, March 10, 2008, in a local hospital.

She was a member of Wesley Chapel Community Chapel. She did volunteer work with the Battered Women's Association.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents; two aunts; and one cousin.

Survivors include daughters, Amanda Caroline Woods and Alexandia Denise Woods; grandson, Jamilius Woods; parents, Albert and Barbara Jean Davenport Sr.; brother, Albert (Lynnequia) Davenport Jr.; sisters, Kimberly Ann Coonrood, Alberta Ivane (Reginald) Hawkins-Marshall, Tammy Lynn (Ransom) Evans; fiancee, Fred Jenkins; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Wesley Chapel Community Church with the Rev. Herbert Wright and the Rev. Kevin Adams officiating.

Burial: Greenwood Cemetery.

Visitation is from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mary Harris, 75, of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, March 6, 2008, at a local hospital.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Harris; sons, Herman and Edward Harris; grandson, Terrell Harris; parents, Samson and Marie Dennis; brother, Samson Dennis; sister, Loretta (James) Carter.

Survivors include sons, Gary and Norman Harris; daughters, Miranda (Lubron) Davis, Melanie (Tracey) Goodwin, Wanda Ervin, all of Chattanoga and Pam Harris, Atlanta; sister, Theola (Horace) Traylor, Miami, Fla.; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a host of nieces; nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the chapel with Pastor Calvin White officiating.

Burial: Highland Memorial Gardens.

Edward Hartline

Edward Carl Hartline, 87, of Ooltewah passed away Wednesday, March 12, 2008, in a local hospital.

He was a member of East Lake Lodge 698 F&AM, the Scottish Rite and the Alhambra Shrine. Mr. Hartline was retired from Combustion Engineering after 42 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Army Air Corps.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Frankie Hartline; and a sister, Maxine Roe.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Pam Hartline, of Tega Cay, S.C.; one daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Mike Makimaa, of Ooltewah; three grandchildren, Ashley Makimaa, Shaun Makimaa and Zach Makimaa.

Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. today at Chattanooga National Cemetery with the Rev. Wayland Stewart officiating.

Patricia Kaschimer, 65, of East Ridge, passed away Tuesday, March 11, 2008.

Survivors include her daughter, Michelle Kaschimer Lowe; two grandsons, Nick and Nathaniel; and two great-granddaughters, Faith and Anna.

Ruth Lanham

Ruth Gant Lanham, of Chattanooga, departed this life Tuesday, March 11, 2008.

She is now with her Lord, Savior and Friend Jesus Christ. Ruth taught God's Word for more than 60 years and lived his word daily in her life. Lanham's Bible Bookshop was to her a ministry more than a business for 42 years. Her main love in life was Jesus, family, friends and the Bookshop. Her heart's desire was to have her children walk in the will of God, share the Salvation of Jesus Christ with all, study her Bible and care for others.

Ruth is survived by her husband, the Rev. John S. Lanham; daughter, Lynda Lanham; and son, Johnny Lanham Jr.

She fought the good fight, kept the faith and finished her course, with love mercy and grace, only found in a daily walk with Jesus and His Word.

Graveside services were held Thursday, March 13, 2008, at 2 p.m. in Chattanooga National Cemetery with the Rev. P.D. Booth officiating.

Leone Lerner

Leone Shaw Lerner, 93, passed away Wednesday, March 12, 2008, in a local hospital.

She was predeceased by her parents, Flora and Henry Shaw; her brother, Clarence Shaw; and her husband, Benjamin Lerner.

Leone was a member of Mizpah Congregation, a housewife, and she volunteered for 23 years in the Memorial Hospital Gift Shop.

She is survived by a son, Thomas Lerner; and daughter-in-law, Teresa, of Nashville.

A graveside service will be today, March 14, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Mizpah Cemetery with Rabbi Joshua Lief officiating.

Helen Mae Lewis, 66, passed away Wednesday, March 12, 2008, in a local hospital.

She was predeceased in death by her parents, William and Irene Phillips.

Helen was a member of Collegedale Community Seventh-day Adventist Church; attended Monterey Bay Academy, Monterey, Calif.. and Southern Adventist University; and was retired from Olan Mills in the production department.

Helen is survived by her loving husband, Charles Lewis, of Ooltewah; one daughter, Shannon (Robert) Snyder; one granddaughter, Brysen Manning; and one great-grandson, Jace Bond, all of Sarasota, Fla. She also is survived by two sisters, two brothers, a mother-in-law, two stepgrandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be Saturday, March 15, 2008, at 4 p.m. at Collegedale Community SDA Church with Pastor Jerry Arnold officiating.

Visitation will be from 3:30 p.m. until the time of service at the church.

Jesse Sedman

Jesse J. Sedman, 86, of Chattanooga, died on Wednesday, March 12, 2008.

He was member of Mile Straight Baptist Church.

Mr. Sedman retired from Combustion Engineering and served in the U.S. Navy for 12 years during World War II and the Korean War.

Mr. Sedman was preceded in death by his parents, George and Elizabeth Sedman; brothers, Leonard Sedman, Alfred Sedman, George Sedman, Frank Sedman; sisters, Amy Rogers, Juanita Owenby and Florence Hicks.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Maxine Sedman; brother, Timothy Sedman; sisters, Mary Belle Coxey, Nellie Able, Ruby Davis; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 15, 2008, at Hamilton Memorial Gardens with Brother Al Goss officiating.

Interment will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

James Smith

James Claude "Tater" Smith, 86, lifelong resident of Chattanooga, passed away Wednesday, March 12, 2008, at his home.

He retired from Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. with over 20 years of service. He was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Smith was a World War II veteran and Purple Heart recipient. He was a three time recipient of The French Des Croix De Guerre, Des TOE. He was a lifetime member of the DAV and a member of The Battle of Normandy Foundation.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ola Mae "Corky" Smith; two brothers; and five sisters.

Survivors include his sons, Dale Smith, of Dalton, Ga., and David L. (Janie) Smith, of Ooltewah; family friend, Winona Barnett, of Chattanooga; sisters, Ruby Webb, Fannie Tallent and Robbie Jennings, all of Chattanooga; brother, John Smith, of Chattanooga; one granddaughter, Amber (Brent) Dilbeck, of Chattanooga; one great-grandchild, Hagen Dilbeck, of Chattanooga; two stepgranddaughters; and one stepgrandson.

Olice Smith, 76, of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, March 13, 2008, in a local health care facility.

Fred Stacks

Fred Banks Stacks, of Hixson, passed away on Wednesday, March 12, 2008.

Fred Banks Stacks was born May 18, 1917, in Dadeville, Ala., to J. Comer Stacks and Martha Ann Treadwell. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy in Guam and other Pacific Islands. Fred enjoyed a long and distinguished career at the DuPont Corp.. He was a devoted and loving husband to Madane Pattillo with whom he enjoyed living in a variety of places including, Augusta, Ga., Brevard, N.C., Belle, W.Va., Beaumont, Texas, Dorado Beach, Puerto Rico and Richmond, Va. In the mid-1980s he and Madane returned to their beloved Hixson and Fred continued to consult for DuPont after his retirement. Fred was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the Elks Club of Brevard, N.C. In addition to his wife of 71 years, Fred loved his friends, his Volkswagens, sports and spending time grilling on his patio. He will be sorely missed by his family for his honesty, refreshing candor, humor and unconditional love and support.

Fred was predeceased by his wife, his brothers, Ted, Ralph and his parents.

Fred is survived his daughter, Sandra Stacks Berry, of New York, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Nena (Robert) Wall, of Northborough, Mass., Elizabeth (Thomas) Goss, of New York, N.Y., and Henry (Melissa) Hyatt, of Greenville, S.C.; and six great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his nurturing caregiver, Angela Jones, of Chattanooga.

A celebration of Fred's life will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Hamilton Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Randy Martin officiating.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Raymond Stamps

Coach "Buck" Stamps, 78, passed away Wednesday morning, March 12, 2008, in Madison, Miss.

He was survived by his wife of 54 years, Barbara; his children, Mr. and Mrs. Grant Stamps and Michele Langston, of Flora, Miss.; his sister, Jacqueline (Hugh) Bennett and family, of Heflin, Ala.; four granddaughters, Cody and Jackie Langston, and Alisha and Ashley Kennedy; brother-in-law, Mr. John King (Linda), of Madison; and several nieces and nephews.

Born in Bremen, Ga., he excelled at football at the University of Chattanooga where he graduated in 1953. Member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He served two years in the U.S. Army. An icon in the Chattanooga sports scene he was a lifelong resident of Lookout Mountain until his move to Mississippi last year. "Coach" served as a recreation director and educator in Lookout Mountain, Tenn., for over 45 years. He was a member of Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church, Lookout Mountain Sports Hall of Fame, Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame Walt Lauder Award Winner, and the Lookout Mountain Golf Club. He was very involved with Dixie Youth Baseball since its inception.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Lookout Mountain School PTA or Lookout Mountain Recreation Department.

Services will be held later in the summer at Lookout Mountain upon the return of his granddaughter from study abroad.

Pierre Wagner

Pierre Rodolphe Wagner, 82, died Tuesday, March 11, 2008, in Hixson, from an extended illness.

Donald Whaley

Donald Eugene Whaley, 77, passed away Thursday, March 13, 2008, in a local hospital.

Mr. Whaley was born May 11, 1930 in Bradley County, son of the late Horace Whaley and Mamie Conner Whaley Rominger. He was a graduate of Bradley Central High School and attended the University of Chattanooga. He was past president of Hickory Valley Civitan Club, one of the founding members of Tyner Youth Athletics Association, and a veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of Brainerd Hills Baptist Church and the James Bible Class. He retired from DuPont in 1991 after 43 years of service.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Robbie Faye Whaley; sons, Donald Victor Whaley and wife, Joyce, Michael David Whaley and wife, Lisa; grandchildren, Reagan, Grant, John and Eva Whaley, all of Chattanooga; and sisters, Barbara Posey and husband, Gene, of Cleveland, and Betty Bratton and husband, Bob, of Chattanooga.

Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. Monday at Brainerd Hills Baptist Church with Dr. Richard Mason and Dr. John Barber officiating.

Interment will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

The James Bible Class will serve as honorary pallbearers.

LaFAYETTE —Rodney L. Boling, 41, formerly of LaFayette, passed away in Mount Juliet, Tenn.

Rodney was a native of Chattanooga but lived most of his life in Ringgold and LaFayette. He was co-owner of Mr. Transmission in Dalton, Ga., and Hixson, and had worked for Newton Mitsubishi for several years. He loved owning his own trucking company, R&B Trucking in LaFayette, and also in Mount Juliet, where he moved in 2004.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Stephanie Diane Boling; his father, William "Sonny" Boling; and brother, George L. Boling.

Survivors include his son, Steven L. Boling, of Ringgold; mother and stepfather, Linda and Clarence Seals, of LaFayette; and stepbrother, Daniel McKenna, Spring Hill, Fla.; mother of his two children, Linda Boling Acuff, of Ringgold; several aunts, uncles, cousins, and lifetime friend, Jim O'Donnell, of Ringgold, also survive.

ROSSVILLE -- Carol Jean Childress, 63, died Wednesday, March 12, 2008, in a local hospital.

She was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga and North Georgia area. Mrs. Childress was retired from Olan Mills after 35 years and was very active at Delray Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her father, Barney Eugene Samples.

ROSSVILLE -- Lamelia Cordelia Crittenden, 98, widow of the late Hershel T. Crittenden, passed away Wednesday, March 12, 2008.

She was the seventh child of 12 children, and was the last surviving child of the late George Thomas and Lisa Day Richardson.

She was a member of Fairview Baptist Church, was a former employee of the Richmond Hosiery Mills in Rossville for over 25 years, and loved reading, gardening and serving her family and others before she came ill several years ago.

The family is very thankful to the nurses and staff at NHC of Rossville for their genuine care and love that was given to Mrs. Crittenden during her stay.

Survivors include two daughters, Betty and the late William "Bill" Ferguson, of Rossville and Fay and M.G. "Pete" Kennedy, of Naples, Fla.; five grandchildren, Susan (Ken) Fletcher, of Stone Mountain, Ga., Robert (Pam) Ferguson, of Rossville, Carin (Jim) Weaver, of Naples, Cathy Kennedy, of Naples and Mark Kennedy, of Naples; six great-grandchildren, Beth (John) Martin, Anne (Stan) Fetzer, Jason Patrignani, of the Citadel in South Carolina, Sara Patrignani, Emily Ferguson and Allison Ferguson; three great-great-grandchildren, Henry Fetzer, Cordelia Fetzer and Thomas Martin; half sister, Mildred Parham, of Trion, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

WOODSTOCK -- Lena Josephine Jones Doyle, 88, formerly of Walker and Catoosa counties departed this life Thursday, March 13, 2008.

She was born in Rock Spring, Ga., to the late Roland and Jimmie Scott Glenn Jones, and was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Clyde Doyle.

She retired from Fort Oglethorpe Elementary School, where she served as school secretary for over 20 years.

Her grandfather was one of the original settlers in Walker County in the early 1800s. The roots of her family are in Rock Springs and she will join her husband of 60 years and several generations of the Jones family in Rock Spring Cemetery.

Survivors include her son, David Doyle, of Woodstock, Ga.; daughter, Patricia Morgan, of Dunlap, Tenn.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 15, 2008, in the funeral home chapel.

Bobby Fowler

ROCK SPRING -- Bobby Gene Fowler, 76, was promoted to Glory on Thursday, March 13, 2008, after a long illness.

He was born in Chickamauga, Ga., on April 17, 1931, the middle child of the late Pascal and Beulah Autry Fowler. He attended Gordon Lee High School in Chickamauga, and Edmondson College of Business in Chattanooga. After joining the U.S. Air Force in January 1951 he served during the Korean War, stationed at Mount Laguna AFB near San Diego, Calif. During his three years of service, he was promoted to the rank of Master Sergeant and was entitled to wear the Korean Conflict ribbon.

After his discharge from the Air Force, Bob returned to work at E.I. DuPont Co. in Chattanooga, where he was employed for 33 years before retiring in 1982 from the company's laboratory as a lab technician specialist.

He served as a deacon and had served as the former chairman of the deacons, Sunday school superintendent, business committee chairman, and on the Pastor Search committee at Burning Bush Baptist Church. He also served as chaplain for Jenkins Chrysler & Dodge in LaFayette, Ga. Bob was a kind and loving man who enjoyed his faith, church and family. He was a patriotic American who cherished his flag and country. He was the most loving husband of his high school sweetheart, Carolyn Cline Fowler, who passed away Sept. 19, 1979.

He was the father of their deceased son, Paul Douglas Fowler, who died on Labor Day in 2005 and he also had a sister who preceded him in death, Lily Neblett.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Craig and Joan Wardlaw Fowler, of Rock Spring; grandson, Michael Alexander Fowler and his wife, Jill Little Fowler; granddaughter, Jessica Holli Gable and her husband, Roone Gable; two great-grandchildren, Ashlyn Grace Maples and Collier Luke Walls Gable; a brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Joyce Fowler, nieces: Patricia Neblett, Debbie Garret and Stephanie Cline; nephews, John, Carl and Pat Neblett, Robert Fowler and Michael Douglas Fowler.

My father taught us the value of persistence, hard work and most importantly the unconditional love of a parent. He was a man among men, according to his partner in Christ, Colin Crosen.
