Alien buys Signal Mountain space house

by Mike O'Neal

The Space House, a Chattanooga landmark since its construction in 1970, was sold at auction Saturday to an out-of-town buyer for $135,000.

The three-bedroom, two-bath home that resembles a spaceship perched on six landing gear-like stilts and its three-quarter acre lot at 1408 Palisades Road was bought — sight unseen — by a Cincinnati woman.

Terry Posey, of Crye-Leike Auctions in Cleveland, Tenn., said the house had drawn more than 50,000 hits on the company’s Web site and that was where the buyer saw the house.

“We auction about 100 houses a year,” he said. “This is the most unusual property we’ve ever done.”
