Clendenin, Mocs second in Linger Longer

Mark Guhne saw the bolt of lightning and scurried for cover Saturday afternoon at the Linger Longer Invitational golf tournament.

His University of Tennessee at Chattanooga team is tied for second after all but one group completed the second round at Reynolds Landing Golf Club in Greensboro, Ga.

“It was a brutal day and extremely windy,” Guhne said. “We got hailed on at the last hole.”

First-round leader J.T. Clendenin of UTC was 1 under par through 17 holes for the day and 7 under for the tournament when play was suspended. He is one stroke behind Robbie Greenwell of Memphis for medalist honors.

The 17th-ranked Mocs are tied with No. 1 Georgia at 575, six strokes behind No. 36 Ole Miss.

“We’re tied with No. 1 and we’re not all playing up to the way we should be,” Guhne said. “Six shots out isn’t a big lead. We just have to go do it.”

The Mocs’ Jonathan Hodge is tied for seventh at 2-under 142. Ben Rickett is at 146, Derek Rende is at 151 and Fredrik Qvicker is at 152.

“We have to get some good rounds out of Freddy and Derek,” Guhne said. “They’re such solid players, and you need all five to play at this level.”
