Dollywood finds its rhythm with celebration of dance

For the 2008 Festival of Nations, Dollywood will host international dance groups around the theme “World of Dance.”

(All groups will perform during the entire run of the festival, unless otherwise noted.)

Rhythm of the Dance, Ireland — A revised performance includes 50 minutes of high-energy step dancing, singing and traditional Irish music.

Russian National Theatre, Russia — A 31-member troupe performs classic and Russian folk dances accompanied by traditional music. Dances weave in elements of the Russian circus and faux combat.

Zambian Vocal Group, Zambia — A group of diverse members of different Zambian tribes unite to perform songs running the gamut from traditional hymns to original material, all featuring a distinctly African flair.

Atahualpa , Ecuador —

This group of six performers have appeared at every Festival of Nations since the first in 2001. They bring the traditional dances and rhythms of Andean salsa and meringue to the Smokies.

Valley Theater Traditional Music, Ireland — A number of visiting Irish bands take the stage in Craftsman’s Valley to shine a light on the strong ties between the Appalachians and the Emerald Isle.

Chiemgau Schuhplattler, Germany — New to the festival this year, this group sports bright Bavarian garb and perform centuriesold dances accompanied by resounding foot stomping. (March 21-31)

Villa de Alhama, Spain — This Spanish folklore group combines storytelling and singing with dancing to tell the story of Spain. (March 28-April 4)

Calpulli Mexican Dance Company, Mexico — This group is a festival newcomer and features vividly costumed dancers performing dances drawing from the cultural heritage of various regions of Mexico. (April 3-28)

Kayumanggi Philippine Performing Arts, The Philippines — The tinikling, the national dance of the Philippines, makes its debut at Dollywood this year accompanied by other traditional Filipino dances. (April 23-May 5) Source: Dollywood
