Fort Oglethorpe pool patrons will have access to a new $600,000 bath house to go with the new $900,000 swimming pool by the start of the 2009 pool season, city officials said.
The new pool in Gilbert-Stephenson Park opens this spring.
Council members approved payment of $28,000 for a design study by Markey and Associates on a facility to replace the old 1972 bath house at a projected cost of $500,000 to $600,000.
“The idea is to take the old bath house down, haul if off and locate a new bath house to fit around the new pool,” Mayor Ronnie Cobb said. “We would eventually run into environmental issues with the old bath house.” He was unsure of how many showers, commodes and sinks will be in the new structure. “Recreation Director Jeff Long showed us an example of a similar 4,000-square-foot facility at our last meeting,” Mr. Cobb said. Mr. Long said a portion of the bath house will also be used for storage.
Mr. Cobb said the Markey firm had estimated the price of the swimming pool at $900,000, and the winning bid was $878,000.
“Their estimate on the pool bath house is about $550,000 to $600,000,” Mr. Cobb said. “I imagine they will be close to the actual price, based on their record.”
City Manager Ron Goulart said the pool and bath house are examples of Fort Oglethorpe stepping up and spending money on recreation.
“Funding for the pool and bath house has come from city tax dollars and a portion is from the special purpose local option sales tax the city receives each year,” Mr. Goulart said.
Mr. Cobb said he believes the cost of the old pool and bath house built in 1972 was about $300,000, compared to the new facilities price of at about $1.5 million.
Council approval of the design contract was unanimous.
