Virginia Leone Smith Bellenfant, 84, passed away Thursday, March 13, 2008, in a local health care facility.
She was predeceased in death by her parents, William and Euda Smith; and her husband, G.W. Bellenfant; also two brothers; and one sister.
Leone was a member of Eastside Church of Christ of Shelbyville, Tenn., and the retired manager of Edwards Interiors of Shelbyville.
Leone is survived by one daughter, Barbara (Jack) Brownfield, of Cleveland, Tenn.; and one son, William Larry Bellenfant, of Chattanooga. She has two grandsons, W. Jackson (Kim) Brownfield and Jeff T. (Laurie) Brownfield, both of Cleveland. Also five great-grandchildren, Kacy, Jackson, Carter, Lauren and Laiken Brownfield, all of Cleveland; also one brother, Powell (Marie) Smith, of Shelbyville; and two sisters, Lorene Williams, of Maryville, Tenn., and Juanita Edwards, of Shelbyville.
A service for Leone will be at 3 p.m. CDT today, March 16, 2008, at Hillcrest Funeral Home, Shelbyville.
Burial will be at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Shelbyville.
Active pallbearers will be Glenn Williams, Jerry Williams, Terry Smith, Jackson Brownfield, Jeff Brownfield, Billy Joe Harris, Carter Brownfield and Jackson Brownfield Jr.

Melvin E. Brown, 50, of Chattanooga, passed away Wednesday, March 12, 2008.

Elizabeth Clark
Elizabeth "Betsy" Alden Clark, 50, of Chattanooga, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 13, 2008, at a local hospital.
Born in Chattanooga, she spent two years in Sweden before graduating Central High School in 1975. She married James Clark at the age of 18 and gave birth to daughter, Audry, nine years later.
Betsy spent a number of years in responsible retail positions including the Oreck sales outlet. In recent years she enjoyed working with her father-in-law in the rental business.
She was most happy cooking, baking and being with family. She has also enjoyed travel, gardening, hiking, canoeing and most recently attending First-Centenary United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Johnny Alden.
Betsy is survived by her loving family of husband, James Clark; father and mother-in-law, Dale Clark Sr. and Shirley Clark; daughter, Audry Elizabeth Clark; sister, Victoria Alden Love, of Tulsa, Okla.; and parents, John and Irene Alden.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today, March 16, 2008, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Dr. David Harr officiating.
The family will receive friends for visitation from noon until the time of the service at 2 p.m. today, March 16, 2008, at the North Chapel.

Virginia Clendenen
Virginia Clendenen, 80, of Hixson, formerly of Pikeville, Tenn., died Friday, March 14, 2008, in an area hospital.
She was a member of the Red Bank Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Clendenen; two sisters, Velma Pursley and Alice Boyd; and one son-in-law, Melvin Cline.
She is survived by two daughters, Carlotta Cline, of Hixson, and Elaine Boyd (Randy) Osby, of Hixson; and one son, Alton Lee Clendenen, of Pikeville; six grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren; one sister, Bobbie (Burl) Hixson, of Chattanooga; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are at 1 p.m. CDT Monday in the chapel with Minister Steve Lusk officiating.
Burial is in Hitchcox Cemetery.

Alyce Debenjak
Alyce A. Debenjak, 79, a resident of Chattanooga, passed away on Thursday, March 13, 2008, at her home.
A loving wife, mother and grandmother, Mrs. Debenjak was active at St. Augustine and St. Jude Catholic churches. She was an avid bridge player and was a past member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus in Ohio.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Debenjak; and a daughter, Therese Green.
Survivors include three daughters, Deborah (Roy) Adorni, Barbara (Brandt) McFarlin and Cindy (Jim) Kedrowski; son-in-law, Bruce Green; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A Mass of Celebration and inurnment will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 28, 2008, at St. Augustine Catholic Church.
The family will gather with friends following the service at St. Augustine Catholic Church.

Jacob Elder
Jacob Kinzie "Jake" Elder, 90, passed away Friday, March 14, 2008.
He was born in Choctaw, Okla., May 31, 1917. At an early age his family moved to Tennessee, where he attended Meigs County public schools. He retired from the trucking business and enjoyed working on small engines and anything mechanical. He loved the outdoors, yard work and his garden.
He was a member of Alpine Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Thomas and Tennie Denton Elder; brother, John Elder; sister, Elizabeth Nance; half brothers, Arthur, Scott and Lonnie Elder; half sister, Mary Ella Neil; and his special granddaughter, Jennifer "Jenny" Elizabeth Elder, who died March 1, 2008.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Luretha Elder; one son, Steven M. (Susan) Elder, of Monroe, N.C.; granddaughters, Vickie Elder, of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and Stephanie (Thomas J.) Daley, of Monroe; great-granddaughters, Mikaela and Annika Meeker; great-grandson, Daniel Jacob Daley; one brother, Thomas Woodrow Elder, of Dayton, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 17, 2008, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with the Rev. Jimmy Fowler officiating.

William "Bill" Raymond Freeman, 70, of Chattanooga, died on Saturday, March 15, 2008, in a local hospital.
He was a retired machinist.

Raymond Gaber
Raymond Richard Gaber, 74, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, March 14, 2008.
He was the son of the late Frank and Barbara Gaber. He retired from John Deere after 36 years as a manufacturer's representative and prior to his death he had worked at Kohl's Department Store on Gunbarrel Road. Mr. Gaber was a deacon partner and usher at Ridgedale Baptist Church and a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Peggy Gaber, of Ooltewah; three daughters, Cindy Craig and her husband, Michael Craig, of Rossville, Pam Goodman and her husband, Bob Goodman, of BonAire, Ga., Vicky Creekmore and her husband, Paul Creekmore, of Woodstock, Ga.; son, Randy Gaber and his wife, Sherry Gaber, of Ooltewah; seven grandchildren, John Craig, Chris Craig, Rick Goodman, Beth Goodman, Kelly Brewer, Ryan Gaber and Jonathan Gaber; six great-grandchildren; brother, Don Gaber and his wife, Vandra Gaber, of Cleveland, Tenn.; sister, Laverna Hoppe and her husband, Wayne Hoppe, of Waukesha, Wis.; several nieces and nephews.

Roger Gorsuch
Roger Lee Gorsuch, 90, of East Ridge, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 14, 2008.
He was a member and Deacon Emeritus at South Seminole Baptist Church and a member of the Open Door Sunday School Class. He was retired from Starkey Printing Co. Roger and Gene together were foster parents to 233 foster children.
Roger was preceded in death by his son, Alan Lee Gorsuch.
Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Gene Gorsuch; children, Kathy Shell Rodgers and husband, Jim, Glenn Gorsuch and wife, Beverly, and Denny Gorsuch and wife, Pat; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory & Florist with Dr. Ron Perry officiating.
Burial will be in Lakewood Memory Gardens, South.

Richard Hummel
Richard Philip Hummel, 84, died in Erlanger hospital, Chattanooga, on Monday, March 10, 2008, with his son and daughter by his side.
He was a man of deep faith, being a devout Lutheran (Missouri Synod) for his entire adult life. He studied his religion on a regular basis and was extraordinarily knowledgeable for a lay person. Richard was active in all aspects of his church life. He was both a member of the architectural review committee and president of the stewardship committee in the Oklahoma District. He taught adult bible classes, ushered, lit candles, cleaned the church, mowed the yards and held virtually every office available in his local churches. He was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church (Tulsa, Okla.), St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church (Woodland, Ind.), and Cross of Christ Lutheran Church (Chattanooga).
The Revs. Harold Klawitter, Karl Brenner and Barry Hildebrandt were all very influential in Richard's life. We are thankful for their presence. We are also comforted that Richard has met his Wonderful Maker after a long and blessed life.
His second son, the Rev. Steven Michael Hummel, passed away in 2006.
Richard is survived by his three children, David Richard Hummel, Rebecca Elaine Johnson and Martha Ann Fishburn; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Memorial services are being scheduled for May at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, (Woodland), Mishawaka, Ind., where he will be laid to rest.

Henry Janow Sr.
Henry A. Janow Sr., 86, of Chattanooga, passed away on Saturday, March 15, 2008, at his residence.
A longtime resident of the Chattanooga area, Mr. Janow had worked with Bi-Lo, formerly Red Food Stores, for 44 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife and mother of his three children, Nellie Gravett Janow; wife, Sonya Everett Janow; son, Henry "Butch" Janow; his parents and 14 siblings.
Survivors include daughter, Nelly (Sam) LeMay, of Soddy-Daisy; son, Harold (Dee) Janow, of Falling Water; daughter-in-law, Betty "Mousey" Janow, of Red Bank; brother, Pete Janow, of Spring City, Tenn.; two sisters, Frances Janow, of Dayton, Tenn., and Florence Lee, of Michigan; four grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

A 36 year member of White Oak Baptist Church, Mrs. Parker had worked in the church nursery for the past 33 years.

Helen Ruth Raborn, 74, of Ooltewah, died Friday, March 14, 2008, at her home.
Mrs. Raborn was a lifelong resident of Ooltewah and attended Pine Ridge Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Joy Club. She was retired from First Tennessee Bank with 25 years of service.
Survivors include her husband, Charles Lowell Raborn; two sons, Miles D. (Jamie) Raborn and Gregory A. (Debbie) Raborn, all of Ooltewah; two sisters, Imogene Davis, Ooltewah, Donna Faye Smith, Chattanooga; three brothers, Marion (Bill) Bowers, Harold Bowers and Donald Bowers, all of Ooltewah; five grandchildren, Casey (Sasha) Raborn, Ashley, Travis, Tyler and Cody; several nieces and nephews.

Clara Bessie Reeves, 73, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away Saturday, March 15, 2008, at her home.
She was a member of Sequoyah Baptist Tabernacle where she was a member of the Willing Workers Sunday School Class. Clara was an avid bowler at Hixson and Fort Oglethorpe Bowling Lanes. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Nettie Marie Gothard Rogers Avans and father, Lonnie Hobert Rogers; sisters, Faye Maples, Ruth Laney, Dorothy Rogers, Ilona Avans; brothers, Danny Joe Avans, Ira C. "Dub" Avans; son, Jimmy DeWayne Reeves; and granddaughter, Kristi Tipton.
She is survived by her husband, James A. J.C. Sims, 69, of Harrison, went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 14, 2008, from a local hospital.

Mayme Sims
Mayme Elizabeth Sims, 86, of Soddy-Daisy, went home to be with her Lord on Friday, March 14, 2008.
She was born and raised in Evensville, Tenn., and lived all of her adult life in Soddy-Daisy. She worked at Abilities Carpet Co. for many years and then spent time caring for family and friends in their homes as a sitter. Her service to the Blind Association of Hamilton County was also a joy for her. Mrs. Sims was a member of Union Fork Baptist Church. She was deeply loved and respected by her family, friends and neighbors and enjoyed them visiting often.
Born to the late Thomas and Mary Swafford, she was the oldest of 10 brothers and sisters.
Mrs. Sims was preceded in death by her husband, Vater M. Sims; son, William "Bill" Sims; and infant son, Michael Anthony Sims.
She is survived by her two grandsons, Thomas (Mary Ann) Sims, Oldfort, Tenn., Brian (Angela) Sims, Ringgold; great-granddaughter, Marissa Swallows, Oldfort; great-grandson, Jordan Sims, Ringgold, Ga.; brother, Robert Swafford, Chattanooga; sister, Betsy Munn, Easley, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be noon Monday, March 17, 2008, at Williamson & Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Wilburn Hardyman and the Rev. Art Jones officiating.
The burial will follow in Smyrna Cemetery in Evensville, Tenn.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, March 16, 2008.

Mary Louise Doughty Webb, 79, of Chattanooga, died Saturday, March 15, 2008, at the Life Care Center in Sparta, Tenn.
Mrs. Webb had been a resident of the Chattanooga area for 75 years. She retired from American Bank after 22 years of service as a student loan officer and was a long-time member of Hixson Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Webb was preceded in death by her husband, Paul P. Webb; and her parents, Charles L. and Helen Y. Doughty, of Lookout Mountain, Tenn.
Her survivors include three sons and two daughters-in-law, Lee and Jean Webb, of Cookeville, Tenn., Charles S. Webb, of Tunnel Hill, Ga. and Mark and Cindy Webb, of Roswell, Ga.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Ann D. Austin and Mrs. Frances D. Cowan, both of Chattanooga; and a brother, Charles L. DoughtyJr., of Greenville, S.C.

Donald Whaley
Donald Eugene Whaley, 77, passed away Thursday, March 13, 2008, in a local hospital.
Mr. Whaley was born May 11, 1930, in Bradley County, son of the late Horace Whaley and Mamie Conner Whaley Rominger. He was a graduate of Bradley Central High School and attended the University of Chattanooga. He was past president of Hickory Valley Civitan Club, one of the founding members of Tyner Youth Athletics Association, and a veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of Brainerd Hills Baptist Church and the James Bible Class. He retired from DuPont in 1991 after 43 years of service.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Robbie Faye Whaley; sons, Donald Victor Whaley and wife, Joyce, Michael David Whaley and wife, Lisa; grandchildren, Reagan, Grant, John and Eva Whaley, all of Chattanooga; sisters, Barbara Posey and husband, Gene, of Cleveland, and Betty Bratton and husband, Bob, of Chattanooga.
Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. Monday at Brainerd Hills Baptist Church with Dr. Richard Mason and Dr. John Barber officiating.
Interment will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery.
The James Bible Class will serve as honorary pallbearers.

ROSSVILLE -- Beatrice Pauline Bray Cordell, 75, passed away Friday, March 14, 2008.
She was born in Dekalb County, Ala., on March 12, 1933, to the late Luther and Minnie Bray, but has lived in the Rossville area for most of her life. She was a member of Chattanooga Valley Baptist Church and her passion in life was spending time with her grandson.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Cordell; brother, W.C. Bray; and grandson, Greg Thomas Meredith.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Scott Meredith and Brenda and Ronnie Henderson, all of Rossville; son and daughter-in-law, Barry and Linda Cordell, of Chattanooga Valley; and one grandson, Scott Meredith III.

Bobby Fowler
ROCK SPRING -- Bobby Gene Fowler, 76, was promoted to Glory on Thursday, March 13, 2008, after a long illness.
He was born in Chickamauga, Ga., on April 17, 1931, the middle child of the late Pascal and Beulah Autry Fowler. He attended Gordon Lee High School in Chickamauga and Edmondson College of Business in Chattanooga. After joining the U.S. Air Force in January 1951, he served during the Korean War, stationed at Mount Laguna AFB near San Diego, Calif. During his three years of service, he was promoted to the rank of master sergeant and was entitled to wear the Korean Conflict ribbon. After his discharge from the Air Force, Bob returned to work at E.I. DuPont Co. in Chattanooga, where he was employed for 33 years before retiring in 1982 from the company's laboratory as a lab technician specialist.
He served as a deacon and had served as the former chairman of the deacons, Sunday school superintendent, business committee chairman, and on the pastor search committee at Burning Bush Baptist Church. He also served as chaplain for Jenkins Chrysler & Dodge in LaFayette, Ga. Bob was a kind and loving man who enjoyed his faith, church and family. He was a patriotic American who cherished his flag and country.
He was the most loving husband of his high school sweetheart, Carolyn Cline Fowler, who passed away Sept. 19, 1979. He was the father of their deceased son, Paul Douglas Fowler, who died on Labor Day in 2005. And he also had a sister precede him in death, Lily Neblett.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Craig and Joan Wardlaw Fowler, of Rock Spring, Ga.; grandson, Michael Alexander Fowler and his wife, Jill Little Fowler; granddaughter, Jessica Holli Gable and her husband, Roone Gable; two great-grandchildren, Ashlyn Grace Maples and Collier Luke Walls Gable; a brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Joyce Fowler; nieces, Patricia Neblett, Debbie Garret and Stephanie Cline; nephews, John, Carl and Pat Neblett, Robert Fowler and Michael Douglas Fowler.
My father taught us the value of persistence, hard work and most importantly the unconditional love of a parent. He was a man among men, according to his partner in Christ, Colin Crosen.
