Rodney English is hanging up his blue and gold whistle.
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga assistant basketball coach has resigned in order to pursue other opportunities — perhaps within the sport or in another venue.
“I don’t know what he’s going to do, and I’m not sure he knows what he’s going to do,” head coach John Shulman said. “He’s a great family guy, and when you’re on the road that much, it’s hard to see your kids.
“We’ll miss him.”
Shulman will hire Rick Cabrera away from Lackawanna College, a junior college in Scranton Pa., once all of the paperwork is complete.
“It looks like that’s the direction we’re going in,” Shulman said. “If it works out, I think he’d be a great addition to our staff. He can recruit, and he can coach.”
English spent two seasons on the sideline for the Mocs, helped coach the post players and assisted with recruiting.
Cabrera was a graduate assistant at Tennessee Tech when Shulman arrived in Cookeville as an assistant coach to Jeff Lebo.
