Staff Photo by Gillian Bolsover -- Tornado survivor David Wilson, 19, gets ready to stand up in his walker assisted by physical therapists Shelia Knight, left, and Erin Kelley at the Siskin Hospital for Physical Rehabilitation today. Mr. Wilson, who is from Chattanooga, was a student at Union University and was injured during February’s tornado.

Tornado survivor David Wilson is now in much less pain and regaining the ability to stand, after being critically injured in the tornado that devastated parts of Jackson, Tenn., last month.

On Monday Mr. Wilson, joined by his parents Mark and Annie, spoke to media for the first time since the Feb. 5 tornado, at Siskin Hospital for Physical Rehabilitation, where he is receiving occupational and physical therapy.

The Chattanooga Christian School graduate sustained crush injuries to his legs that resulted in muscle tissue damage. Toxins released by the dying cells in his legs also caused damage to his kidneys. He was transferred to Erlanger hospital from Jackson-Madison County General Hospital in mid-February.

The Jackson tornado, with 180 mph winds, destroyed more than 70 percent of residential student housing at Union University and affected a number of other campus buildings, university officials said.
