The Lady Mocs watched the tournament selection show on ESPN at a packed Big River Grille & Brewing Works, and the UTC fans on hand let out a roar when they saw the Lady Mocs were awarded the No. 12 seed in the New Orleans Regional. Kansas State, the regular-season champion of the Big 12, is a No. 5 seed.
“I really don’t know much about Kansas State,” UTC coach Wes Moore said. “I know they’ve had a great program for several years, and obviously the Big 12 is one of the best conferences in the country, so I know it will be a tough matchup.”
The Lady Mocs have won 24 games in a row, the longest active streak in NCAA Division I. They won their ninth straight Southern Conference regular-season title and third SoCon tournament in a row.
Defending national champion Tennessee, ranked No. 3 in the final Associated Press poll released Monday, received one of the four No. 1 seeds and will play No. 16 seed Oral Roberts (19-13) on Sunday in West Lafayette, Ind.
Georgia (22-9), which limped into the NCAA tournament having lost half of its final 18 games, had to settle for a No. 8 seed. The Lady Bulldogs will face ninth-seeded Iowa (21-10) on Sunday in Norfolk, Va.
