Gary Arnold, of Chattanooga, passed away Sunday, March 16, 2008, at his residence.

Radovan Bekovich

Radovan Bekovich, 94, of East Ridge, passed away Saturday, March 15, 2008, in a local hospital.

He was a member of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church and was retired from Standard Iron and Wire Works after 26 years of service. Mr. Bekovich was a veteran of the Yugoslav Army and the English Royal Air Force during World War II and was a member of VFW Post 1491. He was an avid pro wrestling fan.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Liberatina Coppola Bekovich; and a daughter, Mary Krell.

Survivors include one daughter, Velica Daniel, of Acworth, Ga.; one son, Risto Bekovich, of East Ridge; two granddaughters, Nadia Krell and Rhonda Krell; several nieces and nephews in Serbia and relatives in Canada and Italy.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church with Father Stavros Ballas officiating.

Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

There will be a trisageon service at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Charles Bell, 54, of Chattanooga died Sunday, March 16, 2008, at a local hospital.

Ray Brown

A. Ray Brown, 87, of East Brainerd, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 16, 2008.

A longtime resident of Chattanooga, Mr. Brown retired from Mason Dixon Trucking Co. after 44 years of service. He was a member of Worley Masonic Lodge and was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Army. Ray was an active member of Morris Hill Baptist Church where he served for 35 years in the Recreation Ministry and also served as a softball coach for many years.

Ray was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

Survivors are his wife of 61 years, Betty Brown; children, Juanita (Steve) Gibson, Christine Hixson, and Robert (Charlotte) Brown, all of Chattanooga; grandchildren, Jamie (Jenny) Hixson, Josh Hixson, Jason (April) Brown, Chris (Kara) Gibson and Stephanie Gibson; great-grandchildren, Cole and Grace Hixson, Josh, Jake, Sarah, Sam and Anna Gibson and Ethan Hurley; several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the chapel with Rev. Bill Mason officiating.

Burial will be at Lakewood Memory Gardens, East.

Pallbearers will be Donny Ricketts, Ed Cannon, Red Johnson, Nelane Poteet, Ronnie Coleman, Roger Crawford, Bob Schmitt and Lamar Haun.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Morris Hill Church Men's Softball Players.

Dr. James Davis

Dr. James W. Davis passed away at his home in Vonore on Monday, March 17, 2008.

He was born on April 7, 1920. Survived the years of the Great Depression. He was a graduate of Central High School's class of 1938 and was awarded a scholastic scholarship to Johns Hopkins University where he attended for two years. He graduated with honors from University of Tennessee at Knoxville in 1943. After graduation he was married to Emily Joe Wright of Sweetwater, Tenn. Jim then graduated from Tulane Medical School in 1946. Following an internship at St. Vincent Hospital in Portland, Ore., Jim served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in Kyoto, Japan for two years. After returning to the states, he went into general practice in Morristown, Tenn., where he stayed for three years. From there he went to the Ocshner Foundation in New Orleans and trained in general surgery. Afterwards, he moved his family to St. Louis and trained in plastic and reconstructive surgery at Barnes Hospital.

He returned to Chattanooga and founded the Plastic Surgery Group of Chattanooga and practiced for 30 years. While there, he started a regional burn unit and one of the first plastic surgery residency programs in the southeast, both at Erlanger Hospital. His prized accomplishment was the establishment of an international program to treat birth defects on Mayan Indians in the Yucatan of Mexico. Near his retirement, he received the distinguished Kenneth L. Pickrell award from the Southeastern Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons.

After retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his family and reaching his goal of traveling to all seven continents. In between his travels, he spent time on the family farm gardening and enjoying the outdoors. He was a member of Sweetwater United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Nora Davis; his siblings, Mattie Lee Davis, Clyde Davis, Sara Emerson, William Mitchell "Billy" Davis Jr. and Mary Lynn Willis.

He is survived by Emily Wright Davis, his wife of 63 years; his sons, Joseph W. Davis, James (Kelly) W. Davis Jr., Mark K. Davis, David (Jamie) M. Brock; and daughters, Donna L. Brock, Emily (Gene) D. Winkler and Pamela (Jeff) D. Billings. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and lots of extended family.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 20, at Sweetwater United Methodist Church with the Rev. Carl Oaks and Pastor Ed Donley officiating.

Stella Goza, 86, of Red Bank, passed away Monday, March 17, 2008, at the Soddy-Daisy Health Care Center.

Stella was the wife of the late Arlyn Goza. She retired from Newton Chevrolet after 20 years of service.

Survivors include her sisters, Hallie White, of Hixson, Ruby Sparks, of Red Bank and Minnie Dickerson, of Florida; brother, George Stephens, of Spring City; several nieces and nephews.

David Tomme Hemphill, 51, of Chattanooga, passed away Sunday, March 16, 2008.

He was a member of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church. David was self-employed as a painter, was a graduate of Brainerd High School class of 1974 and had attended Middle Tennessee State University.

Survivors include his daughter, Adrian Hemphill and her mother, Laura Tyndall, of Chattanooga; stepdaughter, Blair Brannon of Chattanooga; grandchildren, Harper and John Thomas Black, of Chattanooga; parents, Tom and Beverly Hemphill, of Chattanooga; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Paula and Kermit McManus, of Dalton, Ga., and Julie and Mike Thornburg, of Chattanooga; niece and nephews, Kyle and Casey McManus and Caleb and Noah Thornburg.

Evelyn McKeel

Mary Evelyn "Sissie" McKeel, 73, of Chattanooga went home to the Lord on Sunday, March 16, 2008. She passed away peacefully at home in her sleep after a long illness.

Evelyn graduated from Notre Dame High School and retired from Private Industry Council. She was previously employed with Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce and Venture.

She was preceded in death by her parents, J.D. and Clara Potts; sister, Mattie Lou Fox and brother, James "Buddy" Potts.

Evelyn is survived by her childhood sweetheart and husband of 54+years, Bobby; five children, Ann (Phil) Thomas, Julie (Joe) Neale, Susan Seretean, David (Pam) McKeel and Joseph (Donna) McKeel; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; two sisters, Sr. Mary Evelyn O.P. "Jeanette Potts", Joan Potts (Danny) Merriman.

A Mass of celebration will be held at noon Wednesday at St. Jude Catholic Church.

Burial will follow in Mount Olivet cemetery with Joe Fox, Charles McKeel, Charles McKeel Jr., Terry McKeel, Shane Odell and Phil Thomas serving as pallbearers.

Artie McKelvy

Artie Watson McKelvy, 83, Chattanooga, passed away on Monday, March 17, 2008, at a local hospital.

She was a member of Brainerd United Methodist Church and was retired from First Tennessee Bank.

Mrs. McKelvy was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, Carl S. McKelvy; parents, William and Rose McCullough Watson, grandson, Keith Pinckard; five sisters; two brothers.

Survivors are her son, Ron (Jane) McKelvy, Ringgold; daughters, Debbie (Dee) Pinckard, Knoxville, Barbara (Ron) Gordon, Kensington; brothers, Cecil Watson, Florence, Ala., Wesley Watson, Tuscumbia, Ala.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Thomas Ross Page, 66, of East Ridge, passed away Monday, March 17, 2008.

He was a member of Oakwood Baptist Church in Chickamauga, Ga. Mr. Page attended the University of Chattanooga and was employed at Carter's Lake in maintenance.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Page; one son, Thomas Page Jr. and wife, Deana, of Marysville, Calif.; four daughters, Kathleen Hoppel and husband, David, of Etowah, Tenn., Ana Alves, Malden, Mass., Stephanie Mathis and husband, Patrick, of Fort Oglethorpe, and Jaime Pinckard and husband, Shane, of Rossville; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandson. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Will Tanner

Will T. Tanner, 86, a resident of Chattanooga, passed away on Friday, March 14, 2008, in Leesburg, Fla.

Mr. Tanner was born on Oct. 4, 1921, in Gadsden, Ala. to the late Will and Emma Tanner. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the 1781st Division of the U.S. Army Air Corps.

He was a Master Mason and a member of the Ooltewah Masonic Lodge. Mr. Tanner held memberships with the Chattanooga Scottish Rite, the Alhambra Shrine, American Legion Post 95, and the Half Century Club. He had also served as past Commodore of the Loret Boat Club and as a past member of the Royal Order of Jester.

Mr. Tanner retired from Wheeland Foundry after 37 years of service.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.

Survivors include his loving wife, Marie Tanner; three children, Ron Tanner, of Ooltewah, Marcella May, of Decatur, Tenn., and Sheila Hoots, of Charlotte, N.C.; sister, Geanette Able, of Gadsden, Ala.; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. today, March 18, 2008, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with the Rev. Marshall Roberson, the Rev. Jim Milligan, and the Rev. William Coulter officiating.

Deborah Webb

Deborah B. Webb, 57, of Harrison, passed away Sunday, March 16, 2008, after a brief illness.

She was a school teacher at Rivermont Elementary 1st grade for the last two years and has taught in Bradley and Marion counties. She was a member of St. Jude's Catholic Church where she was an interpreter for the deaf at services. She was a teacher of the deaf for TIPS in Chattanooga for many years. She believed in the resurrection and may she rest in peace.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Delbert S. Barth II.

WHITWELL -- Charles Nelson "Chuck" Barnett, 60, died Friday, March 14, 2008.

He was a retired U.S. Naval Lieutenant Commander.

His father, Paul J. Barnett and brother, Alond Barnett preceded him in death.

Robert Chesnutt

CLEVELAND -- Robert Seaborn Chesnutt, 77, a life long resident of Cleveland, passed away Sunday, March 16, 2008, in a Chattanooga hospital.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church. He was a graduate of Bradley Central High School Class of 1948. He was retired from the United States Postal Service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Korean Conflict and received the Good Conduct Medal and the Occupational Medal.

He was a volunteer fireman for over 25 years and was Fireman of the Year in 1971. He received the Distinguished Service Award from the city of Cleveland in 1974.

Mr. Chesnutt was the son of the late Jess B. Chesnutt and Pearl Seaborn Chesnutt and was also preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, James and Elizabeth Chesnutt.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Chesnutt, of Cleveland; one son and spouse, Lynn Alan Chesnutt and Heather Higginbotham, of Cleveland; two grandchildren, Savannah Blair Chesnutt and Jameson Cole Chesnutt, both of Cleveland; niece and spouse, Brenda and Gary Nunley, of Cleveland.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, 2008, at Hilcrest Memorial Gardens with Rev. Andy Ferguson and Rev. Debbie Stokes officiating.

He was a member of Community Baptist Church, a former deputy of Sequatchie County and truck driver for Fletcher Trucking.

John North

CLEVELAND —John Walker North passed away Sunday, March 16, 2008, in the Western Kentucky Veterans Center.

He was born in Stewart County, Tenn., in the community of Indian Mound on Nov. 11, 1916. He grew up in Chattanooga and Chattanooga Valley and attended Chattanooga Valley High School.

He enlisted in the Navy in 1939 and was aboard the U.S.S. Honolulu when Pearl Harbor was attacked on Dec. 7, 1941. He is a veteran of numerous naval battles of the Pacific including Leyte Gulf and Tassfaronga. He achieved the rank of Machinist's Mate First Class before returning to Chattanooga Valley at the end of World War II. He married Mary Catherine LeCroy of Chattanooga Valley in 1947.

Mr. North worked for Southern Chemical Cotton Co., and Hercules Corporation in Chattanooga. After moving to Cleveland, Tenn., he worked for Rust Engineering, Olin Corporation and M&M Mars as an instrumentation designer. He earned the designation of professional engineer. He retired in 1987, and has resided in Henderson, Ky., since 2001.

Mr. North was a member of the Instrumentation Society of America, the Pearl Harbor Survivor's Association and the American Legion. He attended Flintstone Baptist Church in Chattanooga Valley, First Baptist Church in Cleveland, and First Baptist Church in Henderson, Ky.

He is preceded in death by his parents John G. North and Annis McGregor North, and his brothers Alfred North, Paul L. North and David M. North.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine L. North, Henderson, Ky.; his daughters, Annis North Shaver and her husband, John, of Dayton, Ohio; Leslie North Hall and her husband, Ben, of Henderson, Ky.; granddaughter, Elizabeth "Libby" Hall, of Hoboken, N.J.; his sister, Doris North Tatum, of Rossville; and his brother, James H. North, of Chattanooga.

A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 19, 2008, at Chattanooga National Cemetery with Rev. John M. North officiating. Military honors will conclude the service.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Pearl Harbor Survivors.

CHICKAMAUGA -- George Franklin "Frank" Plaster, 87, passed away Saturday, March 15, 2008, in a local hospital.

He was born in Chickamauga to the late Lewis J. and Mary Hogan Plaster. He was a lifelong resident of Walker County, Ga. and he attended Gordon Lee High School in Chickamauga.

He served his country in World War II in the U.S. Navy. After returning home from the war, he worked at Yates Bleachery, Crystal Springs Mills, and as a salesman at the former Chevolet dealeship in Chickamauga. He was a self-employed car salesman, owned and operated his own service station and for the past several years sold produce to local restaurants, stores and to individuals out of his truck. He was well known and loved by his customers and friends for his good produce.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Magdalene "R.T." Veal Plaster; grandson, Dustin Penney; sisters, Elizabeth Plaster, Virgie Evans; brothers, Clark, Arnold, Jim and Spearman Plaster.

He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Stella and Teddy Penney, of Soddy-Daisy, Eulene and Leroy Matthews, of Chickamauga; grandchildren and their spouses, Kathy and Edwin Walker, Stanley and Kim Matthews; great-grandsons, Dylan and Sam Walker, Reagan Matthews; several nieces and nephews.

Fay Pettyjohn

FLAT ROCK -- Fay Winford "P.J." Pettyjohn, 67, was called home by the Lord on Sunday, March 16, 2008, at his residence in Flat Rock.

He was born May 12, 1940.

He was a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church in Flat Rock. He was in the insurance business for many years and owned his own agency in Stevenson, Ala.., until he retired. He also worked for Chattanooga Glass Co. for a number of years. He loved sports and was an avid golfer and fisherman. Most of all he loved the Lord and gospel music.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Isabelle Pettyjohn; daughter, Sherry Lynn Jones; and an infant brother.

Survivors include his loving wife of 21 years, Bernice Bowen Pettyjohn; daughter and son-in-law, Janet and John Arthur, granddaughters, Hannah Arthur and Mikaela Jones.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. CST at Corner Stone Funeral Chapel with the Rev Jim Hixson and Roland Kesterson officiating.
