Almeda J. Ashford 86, of Chattanooga, passed on Thursday, March 13, 2008, at a local health care facility.

Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. Thursday, March 20, 2008, at Greater Friendship Primitive Baptist Church with Elder James Penney officiating.

James Bruce Boggs, 57, formerly of Chattanooga, died Saturday, March 15, 2008, in Florida.

Marlon Broadnax

Marlon Dennis Broadnax, 50, passed away on Friday March 14, 2008, at his residence.

He was preceded in death by his father, Butler James Broadnax.

He is survived by his sons, Everett Broadnax, of Chattanooga, and Marlon Dennis "Donte" Broadnax, of Atlanta; mother, Emma Broadnax; brothers, Steven (Janice) Broadnax, Cornelius Broadnax; sisters, Denise(William) Clark, Wanda Norris and Terri Broadnax; uncles, Harvey Broadnax and Dr. Kemit Brown, of Nashville; great-uncle, Daniel Chandler, of Indianapolis, Ind.; aunts, Maxie and Patricia Broadnax; great-aunts, Ann Sanderfur and Grace Payeton; grandmother, Willie Talley; several nieces and nephews, a host of devoted cousins and friends.

A. Ray Brown, 87, of East Brainerd, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 16, 2008.

Services will be held today at 1 p.m. in the chapel with the Rev. Bill Mason officiating.

Burial will be at Lakewood Memory Gardens, East.

Gertis Viola Hasting Carlton, 79, of Soddy-Daisy, died Monday, March 17, 2008.

She was born March 2, 1929.

She married Thomas F. Carlton on June 28, 1944. Preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Ethel Hasting; two brothers, Emry and Harrison Hasting; and one sister, Rita Green.

She is survived by her husband, Thomas F. Carlton, of Soddy-Daisy; two daughters, Ima Jean (Bill) Rothfolk, of Dayton, Tenn., and Diane (Larry) Robinson, of Woodstock, Ga.; three sons, Bill (Wilma) Carlton, of Dayton, Jerry (Gennie) Carlton of Chicago, and Dean (Sara) Carlton of Soddy-Daisy; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Geneva Long, of Red Bank and Nelly Berrell, of Chattanooga and one brother, LV "Buddy" Hasting, of Dayton.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. CDT in the chapel with Pastor Freddie Marler officiating.

Burial will be in Rigsby Cemetery.

Marjorie Scott Hall, 74, of Harrison, went to be with her Lord on Monday, March 17, 2008, from her home.

She was of the Baptist faith.

David Tomme Hemphill, 51, of Chattanooga, passed away Sunday, March 16, 2008.

He was a member of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church. David was self-employed as a painter, was a graduate of Brainerd High School class of 1974 and had attended Middle Tennessee State University.

Alzine McDaniel Jackson, 72, of Chattanooga, passed away Saturday, March 15, 2008 in a local nursing facility.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Lee Jackson; daughters, Virginia Hays and Gloria Renee Jackson; parents, Willie and Eaphis McDaniel. She was retired from Hamilton County School System.

Survivors include sons, Gary (Georgetta) Jackson, Michael Jerome Jackson, Milton Bernard Jackson and Jimmy Dewayne Jackson; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; brothers, James Edward Wright and King Davis Miller; sisters, Bessie Mae Lovelace, Pauline Sims, Charlsie Mae Brown and Peggy Ann Mathis; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Audrey Klaver

Audrey Jean Durham Klaver, 70, of Chattanooga, passed away on the evening of Thursday, March 13, 2008, at a local hospital.

She was predeceased by her son, Gary Walker.

She is survived by her half-sister, Diane Grimes and half-brother, Frankie Durham. Jean had eight children, Charlotte Hendrix, Rick Klaver, Mary McKinney, William Klaver, David Klaver, Karen Clark and Kevin Clark; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, March 21, at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church on North Moore Road. All are welcome.

Frances Lorraine Hunter Lindsey, 85 passed Friday, March 14, 2008, at her home.

She was a member of Second Missionary Baptist Church and retired from Miller Brothers Department Store.

Frances was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include a loving daughter, Barbara Lindsey (Wilbert R. Clyde Edmond "Eddie" Robinson Jr., 61, passed away Saturday, March 15, 2008, at home.

He was preceded in death by his father, Clyde E. Robinson Sr.

Eddie was of the Church of Christ Faith, a veteran of the Navy and the owner/operator of the Coffee Shoppe in the Doctors Building.

Eddie is survived by his wife, Hisako; his mother, Monteen Robinson; and his brother, George (Debbie) Robinson Sr., all of Chattanooga; and a sister, Teresa (Lee) Hennis, of Los Angeles, Calif.

A Chapel service will be today, March 19, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with John Cupp officiating.

Thomas Russell

Thomas "Tommy" E. Russell, 74, of East Ridge, passed away Monday, March 17, 2008.

He was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area, and served in the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Russell was of the Church of Christ. He retired from Chattem Inc. after 35 years of service.

He is preceded in death by his parents, David L. and Mabel W. Russell; and his wife, Betty R. Russell.

Survivors include, a daughter, Sheri "Cindy" and Dana Rogers, of Tunnel Hill, Ga.; two grandchildren, Sheri Allen (Craig) Breedlove, Sommer Allen (Eddie) Hennessee; four great-grandchildren, Preston Thomas, Kheri, Penelope and MiKadyn; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 11:30 a.m. in the South Crest Chapel with Ministers John Cupp and George Cupp officiating.

Interment will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery with full military honors.

William Thomas Sr.

William A. Thomas, Sr. passed away Monday, March 17, 2008, at a Chattanooga hospital as a result of recent medical problems. He was surrounded by his wife, three sons, and two adult grandchildren at the time of his death. He was 86 years old.

Mr. Thomas was born and raised in Whiteville, Tenn. During World War II, he worked in B-25 Billy Mitchell assembly plant in Memphis and was drafted to the Army Air Corps. He served as a gunner on a B-24 Liberator in the 15th Air Force, Bomber Group, 740 Squadron. He was stationed in Cerignola, Italy and participated in 47 missions over Southern Europe.

A University of Virginia architectural graduate, "Red", as he was affectionately called by family and friends, was a principle member in the architectural firm of Thomas, Ross and Stanfill of Jackson, Tenn. for about 50 years. They designed commercial buildings and early on— residential buildings in the West Tennessee area and many other states.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Jackson, for over 50 years but had been recently attending Burks Methodist Church of Hixson.

Mr. Thomas is survived by his wife of 58 years, the former Josephine Waucoupe Rhea, of Sommerville, Tenn.; three sons, William A. "Bill" Thomas Jr., of Chattanooga, James Robert "Bob" Thomas, of Maryville and Brian Rhea Thomas, of Knoxville; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, March 21, from the North Chapel of George A. Smith and Sons.

Burial will follow in Melrose Cemetery in Whiteville, Tenn.

Visitation will be Thursday from 5 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home

William Totherow

William C. "Bill" Totherow Sr., 81, of Sale Creek, formerly of Hixson, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 18, 2008.

He was born on Aug. 7, 1926, in DeKalb County, Ala. Bill accepted Christ in 1945 in the South Pacific while serving in the Navy during World War II. He proudly celebrated his 63rd spiritual birthday this past Monday. He was a member of Covenant Baptist Church where he was the head usher and served on several committees. After the war he was a graduate of Edmondson Business College, former employee with DuPont Corporation and owned and operated several businesses including A-1 Portable Buildings for the past 26 years.

He was a great family man who loved his wife and family more than anything and enjoyed taking everyone out to eat.

Bill was preceded in death by a daughter, Beverly Totherow; son, Aaron Totherow; parents, Martin and Hattie Totherow; siblings, Hugh, Herb, Chester, Jessie, Ola, Lloyd, Paul David.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Betty Totherow; children, June (Von) Franklin, Donna (Bob) Banks, Bill Hindmon, William Calvin (Felicia) Totherow Jr., Joe (Lisa) Totherow and Jon (April) Totherow; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; brothers, James and Charles Totherow; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Graybeal; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Covenant Baptist Church with the Rev. Marcus Clagg, the Rev. Paul Stuart and the Rev. Joseph Totherow officiating.

Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

James Atchley Jr.

CLEVELAND -- James Arthur "Bud" Atchley Jr., 86, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 18, 2008.

He was born in Knox County on May 1, 1921. He was a member of Westwood Baptist Church for 25 years. He was a retired commercial equipment salesman and enjoyed work as a greeter at Wal-mart Garden Center for nearly 10 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in World War II.

Mr. Atchley was the son of the late James Arthur Atchley Sr. and Hattie Bibb Atchley.

Bud left to cherish his memories his loving wife of 25 years, Marlette Atchley; daughters, Marty Schoocraft, Pamela Bullard and Alan Bullard, all of Chattanooga; son, James A. Atchley III and wife, Margaret Price Atchley, of Memphis; four stepchildren, Cherie (Tim) Kuhns, of Hixson, Norman (Kaye) McGuffey, Stephen (Shannon) McGuffey, Matthew (Feleena) McGuffey, of Cleveland; 17 grandchildren and was loved by family and friends.

DAYTON -- Ruby Davis, 76, of Chattanooga, and formerly of Dayton, died Monday, March 17, 2008, at Life Care of Chattanooga.

She was born in Spring City May 29, 1931 the daughter of the late George and Florence McNutt Sedman. She was a graduate of Rhea Central High School and retired from Bell South.

Ruby is survived by her daughters, Sheila Glover and Susan Payne, both of Chattanooga; her sisters, Nellie Abel, of Dayton and Mary Belle Coxey, of Chattanooga; brother, Tim Sedman, of Virginia; and six grandchildren.

Graveside services with a white dove release will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Buttram Cemetery in Dayton.

Isaac Dawson

SOUTH PITTSBURG -- Isaac McKenzie Dawson, 79, died Monday, March 17, 2008, in a local healthcare facility.

The son of the late Edward and Cora Hambrick Dawson, he was a member of Orme Valley Church of God and worked as a chef during the many years he lived in Rockford, Ill. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Grace Cleveland, Bertha Dawson; brothers, Edward and Frank Dawson; niece, Brenda Wilbanks; nephew, Leon Dawson.

He is survived by brother, William Dawson, of Bridgeport, Ala,; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted from Orme Valley Church of God today, March 19, 2008, at 11 a.m. CDT.

Interment will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Bridgeport, Ala.

The body will lie in state at the church today from 9 a.m. CDT until service time.

John North

CLEVELAND —John Walker North passed away Sunday, March 16, 2008, in the Western Kentucky Veterans Center.

He was born in Stewart County, Tenn., in the community of Indian Mound on Nov. 11, 1916. He grew up in Chattanooga and Chattanooga Valley and attended Chattanooga Valley High School.

He enlisted in the Navy in 1939 and was aboard the U.S.S. Honolulu when Pearl Harbor was attacked on Dec. 7, 1941. He is a veteran of numerous naval battles of the Pacific including Leyte Gulf and Tassfaronga. He achieved the rank of Machinist's Mate First Class before returning to Chattanooga Valley at the end of World War II. He married Mary Catherine LeCroy of Chattanooga Valley in 1947.

Mr. North worked for Southern Chemical Cotton Co., and Hercules Corporation in Chattanooga. After moving to Cleveland, Tenn., he worked for Rust Engineering, Olin Corporation and M&M Mars as an instrumentation designer. He earned the designation of professional engineer. He retired in 1987, and has resided in Henderson, Ky., since 2001.

Mr. North was a member of the Instrumentation Society of America, the Pearl Harbor Survivor's Association and the American Legion. He attended Flintstone Baptist Church in Chattanooga Valley, First Baptist Church in Cleveland and First Baptist Church in Henderson, Ky.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John G. North and Annis McGregor North; and his brothers, Alfred North, Paul L. North and David M. North.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine L. North, Henderson, Ky.; his daughters, Annis North Shaver and her husband, John, of Dayton, Ohio, Leslie North Hall and her husband, Ben, of Henderson, Ky.; granddaughter, Elizabeth "Libby" Hall, of Hoboken, N.J.; his sister, Doris North Tatum, of Rossville; and his brother, James H. North, of Chattanooga.

A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. today, March 19, 2008, at Chattanooga National Cemetery with the Rev. John M. North officiating. Military honors will conclude the service.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Pearl Harbor Survivors.

Earl Smith

EVENSVILLE -- Earl D. Smith, 95, died Tuesday, March 18, 2008, at Rockwood Health Care.

A lifelong resident of Rhea County, he was a member of Concord Baptist Church and a WWII veteran serving in the U.S. Army in the Phillipines.

He was preceded in death by wife, Addie Smith; parents, Andy and Ollie Brown Smith; three brothers, Jesse, Claude and Thomas Smith.

Survivors: three sons, Max (Phyllis) Smith, Jimmy (Donna) Smith, all of Evensville, Dallas (Wanda) Smith, Dayton, Tenn.; three sisters, Helen Bishop, Dayton, Leota Boofer, Spring City, Tenn., Betty Jewell, Dayton; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home with the Rev. Shane Johnston officiating.

Madge Still

McDONALD -- Madge Chase Still, 99, passed away Saturday March 15, 2008, in a local hospital.

She was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church but in later years attended the Victory Prayer House. She was a member of FRINS at Broad Street United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Still was a retired elementary school teacher, having taught in the Bradley County school system for 40 years. She taught in Red Hill, Big Springs and Prospect elementary schools.

She was a graduate of Bradley Central High School, class of 1927. Mrs. Still furthered her education at Tennessee Wesleyan College, University of Tennessee and East TN. State Teachers College in Johnson City.

She was preceded in death by her parents, W.H. McKay and Alice Shanks McKay; husband, William Ernest Chase; son, George William Chase and several brothers and sisters.

Mrs. Still is survived by grandsons, Bart Chase and wife, Aleta of Cleveland, Trey Chase and wife, Barbara of McDonald, George "Chipper" Chase and Shane Chase, of Chattanooga; granddaughter, Marlie Chase Jones, of Chattanooga; step granddaughter, Whitney Cannon, of Cleveland; six great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 20, 2008, in the chapel of Fike Funeral Home with Pastor Tyler Bramlett officiating.

SEQUATCHIE -- Ava Lee McCullough Vance, 96, died Monday, March 17, 2008, in a Chattanooga healthcare facility.

The daughter of the late Alonzo and Pheobia Ables McCullough, she had been a member of McKendree United Methodist Church in Jasper for over 60 years. She was educated at the George Peabody Teachers College and did her post-graduate work at State College in Murfreesboro. She and her late husband, Mr. Thomas B. Vance owned and operated the Vance Furniture Co. in Jasper for many years. She also taught at Jasper Elementary School and served as principal at Whiteside School and Sequatchie School.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Lawrence McCullough; and sister, Frankie McCullough.

She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Pheobe A. Vance, of Chattanooga; nieces, Lynn Broyles, Vicki and Tommy Rogers, Dinah and Robert Hoch, Linda and Alex Broyles; and sister-in-laws, Ann Vance and Marilynn Broyles.

Funeral services will be conducted from the Jasper Chapel of Rogers Funeral Home today, March 19, 2008, at 2 p.m. CDT with the Rev. David Tabor officiating.

Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery in Jasper.

LaFAYETTE -- Arville Ray "Doodle" Drennan, 65, passed away Monday, March 17, 2008.

A lifelong resident of the North Georgia area he was of the Baptist faith and was retired from Local Union #669. He was a 1961 graduate of LaFayette High School, a member of the LaFayette Masonic Lodge, and an avid sportsman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thad and Ava Holbrook Drennan; and brother, Ralph Holden Drennan.

He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Tammy Drennan (Reid) Harrington, of Ringgold, Ga., and Shay Drennan (Shannon) Love, of Ringgold; sister and brother-in-law, Charlotte (Lewis) Gothard, of Ringgold; brother and sister-in-law, T.C. (Mae) Drennan Jr., of Ringgold, Ga.; two grandchildren, Drennan Reid Harrington, of Ringgold, and William Holden Love, of Ringgold; and several nieces and nephews.

Melvin Holloway Jr.

ROSSVILLE -- Melvin A. Holloway Jr., 66, passed away Tuesday, March 18, 2008, at his residence.

A lifelong resident of the Chattanooga and Rossville area, Mr. Holloway was a Mason with the Tompkins Lodge 466 F&AM, a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, was a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserve; and was retired from Aramark with 25 years of service. Mr. Holloway will always be known as being a wonderful husband, father and friend.

His parents, Melvin A. Holloway Sr. and Evelyn preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Janice Holloway; three daughters and son-in-law, Stephanie Haselwander, of Greenville, S.C., Stacie and Mike Easterling, of Monroe, Ga., and Heather Holloway, of Ringgold; brother, Jack Holloway, of Ooltewah; sister, Glenda Barrett, of East Ridge; 15 grandpets; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Friday at noon in the South Crest Chapel with the Rev. Steve Brandon officiating.

Interment will follow in Tennessee-Georgia Memorial Park.

She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Verlyn Price, LaFayette; daughters and their husbands, Annette and Lynn Thompson, Jane and Terry Dobson, all LaFayette; grandsons and their wives, Brian and Faithanne Ridley, Greenville, S.C. Ben and Katy Thompson, Cartersville; granddaughters and their husbands, Holly and Boyd Greene, Rock Spring, Julie and Joe Psaila, Calhoun, Bonnie and Greg Hoffmann, LaFayette; great-grandchildren Tucker Ridley, Greenville, Bryson Hoffmann, LaFayette, Naomi Thompson, Cartersville; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Juanita Turner

ROSSVILLE -- Juanita A. Turner, 82, passed away Monday, March 17, 2008, at a local hospital.

A lifelong resident of the Chattanooga and Rossville area, Mrs. Turner was a former member of Chattanooga First Church of the Nazarene where she served as Sunday school teacher for many years and currently a member of Battlefield Parkway Church of the Nazarene. Mrs. Turner operated a licensed daycare where she opened her home to 65 children of whom she loved and cared for over the years. She was also known for her ability to write. She was an author of numerous poems and short stories, and many people received her notes of encouragement, putting a smile on the recipients face.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Allen "Gene" Turner; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jack and Tory Turner, of Delaware, and Terry and Jackie Turner, of Michigan; sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Paul Coffey, of Ringgold; three grandchildren, Jake Turner, of Maryland, Katie (Lyle) Saylor, of Michigan, and Shelley Turner, of Michigan; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. in the South Crest Chapel with Pastor Joe Brown officiating.

Interment will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

EMORY, Va. -- Gilbert C. "Connie" Culberson died Sunday, March 16, 2008, at his home in Emory, after a brief illness.

He was born on April 23, 1918, to the late Louise and Neal Culberson of St. Elmo, Chattanooga, and was married to Dorothy Price, Chattanooga.

He attended Chattanooga High School, and was a graduate of Emory & Henry College, Emory, Va., where he served as executive assistant to the president until his retirement in 1983.

He is survived by his wife, four children, nine grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Louise and Neal Culberson; his sister, Helen Rollins; and grandson, Allen Culberson, Lynchburg, Va.

James Garey

HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. -- James Douglas Garey, 44, passed away on Tuesday, March 18, 2008, at Mission Hospital after an eight year battle with pulmonary hypertension.

The son of Betty Rudisaile Garey and the late James Kelley Garey, he was a lifelong resident of Henderson County.

He was a route salesman and attended Mud Creek Baptist Church. He was a former little league coach and enjoyed boating.

He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Dena Garey; mother, Betty Rudisaile Garey, of Chattanooga; sons, Spencer Douglas Garey and Jacob Tanner Garey, both of Hendersonville; a sister, Lisa Garey Brown of Chatanooga; and his grandmother, Mildred Garey, of Fletcher.

The family would like to thank Dr. Gail Clary and her staff for their love and support through the years.

HICKORY, N.C. -- Thelma "Peg" Marie Sisemore McDaniel, 79, passed away Tuesday, March 18, 2008, at Lutheran Home Hickory East.

Born on Oct. 28, 1928 in Chattanooga, she was the daughter of the late James Britton and Pauline Marie Gaither Sisemore.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Gordon Lee Sisemore.

She is survived by her husband, Marvin "Mac" L. McDaniel, of Hickory; a daughter, Pamela M. Witters and husband, Mitchell, of Hickory; a brother, Carl Nelson Sisemore, of Hixson; a grandson, Shawn Hughes and wife, Tammy, of Apison, Tenn.; a granddaughter, Quinn Axelberd, of Jacksonville Beach, Fla.; two great-granddaughters, McKenzie and Samantha Hughes, of Apison; and two nephews.
