Seven buildings on the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga campus were evacuated today after a bomb threat was reported in Grote Hall shortly after 2 p.m., authorities said.

Students were alerted to the situation via a new system of text messages and e-mail, University Relations employee April Cox said.

“They seemed to go through very quickly,” Assistant Vice Chancellor Chuck Cantrell said of the alerts.

University officials did not specify how the threat was received. Students were allowed to return to the Vine Street area after 3 p.m.

UTC Police, the Chattanooga Fire Department and the Chattanooga Police Department’s Bomb Squad investigated Grote Hall, located at the corner of Vine and Baldwin streets. Nothing was found during a sweep through the building, Chattanooga Fire Department spokesman Bruce Garner said in a news release.
