Split end and defensive end are two of Georgia’s most competitive positions as the Bulldogs turn toward Saturday’s first scrimmage of the spring.
Georgia held its sixth spring workout Thursday and will hold a brief workout today before scrimmaging Saturday on the Woodruff practice fields behind the Butts-Mehre building. The Bulldogs have been forced to practice three consecutive days because Wednesday’s scheduled workout was scratched due to bad weather.
Bulldogs coach Mark Richt remains pleased about the depth he has at almost every position.
“I just think we’ve got a lot of guys that are going to be ready to play on both sides of the ball,” Richt said. “The offensive line is probably the furthest from having the depth and the confidence in the depth. The potential is there. We just haven’t seen them do it.”
Injuries to guards Clint Boling, Tanner Strickland and Chris Little have hindered the development of offensive-line depth.
The most notable change offensively since the release of the spring depth chart is senior Kenneth Harris moving past junior Kris Durham as the starting split end. Each player has totaled 19 receptions the past two seasons, but Durham, who played at Calhoun High School, had an 11-4 edge last season.
“Kenneth has always been scratching the surface of being a starter,” Richt said. “He’s played a good bit over his career. He hasn’t always been the starter, but it’s Kenneth’s time, and he ought to be able to make a big impact for us this year. He’s been practicing that way and has been doing the things that leaders do.”
Said receivers coach John Eason: “Kenneth has been doing a nice job, and Kris has been doing a nice job.”
Roderick Battle and Jeremy Lomax remain the starters at defensive end, but Jarius Wynn continues to receive praise on a daily basis.
“Jarius is solidifying a good bit of playing time, in my opinion,” Richt said. “Whether or not he starts or not — there is a lot of time before we decide that. I’m just impressed with his attitude and work ethic.”
