Jenny Bates

Jenny Lynn Bates, 40, of Chattanooga, died Friday, March 21, 2008, peacefully at home, in her mother's arms surrounded by close friends and her three devoted kitties.

Her energy and love for life will be celebrated by her many friends and family. She was a graduate of Notre Dame High School and a member of St. Jude Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, John and Ruth Perruso; paternal grandparents, William B. Bates, Bill and Edna Wiseman.

Survivors include her loving mother, Terry Perruso, Chattanooga; uncles, Mike (Susan) Perruso, Chattanooga, William B. (Ann) Bates, Dayton, Tenn.; aunt, Lynn Perruso and cousins, Michelle Perruso, Boggan and Andy Bates; great-uncle, Vaughn (Wilma) Swafford, Crossville, Tenn., and other cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Jude Catholic Church with Father David Carter and Father Mike Nolan officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Chattanooga; Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization of Chattanooga ; Pet Placement Center; Humane Educational Society and the McKamey Animal Care & Adoption Center.

William Berry Sr.

William "Bill" Leonard Berry Sr., of Chattanooga, passed away on Thursday, March 20, 2008, at a local medical center.

Mr. Berry was born Dec. 21, 1929 in Chattanooga, Tenn. He graduated from Notre Dame High School when it was on 8th Street, and shortly thereafter joined the U.S. Army. Upon receiving an honorable military discharge, Bill began his adventures in life and became known for his creative mind and tenacious spirit. His talents guided him through several business ventures with invited participation in national, state, and local political circles. Education held special value in his personal life and his dream of a college degree was realized during his senior years. Along the way he inspired generations of all ages.

Bill was a devout Catholic in faith and practice. He attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church and was an Honorary Life member of the Knights of Columbus Council 610.

Preceding him in death were his parents Leonard Taylor Berry and Mattie Cummings Berry.

Family members remaining to cherish his memory include Val Jean Breedlove Berry, his devoted wife of 53 years; son, Pat (Eugenia) Clarkson; son, Bill (Rosa) Berry Jr.; daughter, DeAngela (Gaylon) Tinker; daughter, Lynn Berry (Jack) Roe, and son, Jack (Kary) Berry. He was a proud grandfather to 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Bill had a "big heart" and shared it with family and friends.

Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. on Monday at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

The Knights of Columbus Father Patrick Ryan Assembly 1084 will serve as Honor Guard and pallbearers.

Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday with a 3:30 p.m. Rosary Service, and 1-2 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.

The family requests that donations be made to O.L.P.H. Church in lieu of flowers.

Illyana Jean Hawkins Cox, 61, of Chattanooga, passed away Tuesday, March 18, 2008, in a local healthcare facility.

Carrie Daugherty

Carrie Amanda Daugherty, 24, of Chattanooga, passed away on Wednesday, March 19, 2008.

Carrie was born in Chattanooga on May 8, 1983. She attended pre-school at St. Peters Episcopal Church, then attended St. Jude Catholic School and was a 2001 graduate of Notre Dame High School where she was voted most spirited, involved in campus ministries and student council. Carrie attended Spring Hill College and was currently enrolled at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Carrie was a cheerleader and was named the first Homecoming Queen of the Millennium. She loved working at Barleys with her friends. Carrie was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church where she was very active with the youth serving as Diocesan on the Youth Ministry Advisor Council. She was training for a marathon to help raise money to fight childhood cancer.

Carrie was preceded in death by her niece, Emily Ransom; and a grandfather, Harry Daugherty.

Our lives are better left to chance, I could have missed the pain, but I'd have had to miss the dance.

She is survived by her parents, Carol and Steve Daugherty; siblings, Wendy (Jonathon) Ransom, Will, Patrick, Tim and Scott (Angel) Daugherty, Shannon (Rob) Boyd and Steve Daugherty Jr.; grandparents, Jim and Helen Rogers and O.T. Daugherty; nieces and nephews, Jon Pat, Max, Chloe, Jack, Annie and Mia; many aunts, uncles and cousins.

A Mass of Celebration will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Jude Catholic Church with Father Mike Nolan officiating.

Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 p.m. with a prayer service at 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Eric James Hall, 27, of Red Bank, died Wednesday, March 19, 2008.

Eric was born May 19, 1980, in Cedar Grove, W.V., the son of James David Hall and Mary Belle Alton Hall of Cedar Grove.

Eric was loved and will be missed by his family. Besides his parents, Eric is survived by his wife Tania Johnson Hall; daughter, Richelle; son, Tyler; and step-daughter, Carissa Rogers, all of Red Bank; his sister, Lori Ann (Brian) Erie of Rossville, Ga.; and grandparents, Katherine and David Hall of Cedar Grove, W.V.

Graveside services for Eric were held Friday, March 21st at 2 p.m. at Buttram Cemetery with the Rev. Bob Carroll officiating.

Charles Inman

Charles Richard Inman, 84, of Lookout Valley, died Thursday, March 20, 2008, at a local hospital.

He was a graduate of Coffee High School and attended Tennessee Temple College. He and his wife Margaret served in many churches in Alabama and Tennessee, where he was a church starter and bi-vocational pastor. He worked for TVA at Colbert Steam Plant, Ocoee, and Watts Bar for over 20 years as an administrative officer. He was a member of Lookout Valley Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Arrie Inman; brothers, James, Fred, Jasper, and William Inman; and his first wife of 45 years, Margaret Richardson Inman.

He is survived by his wife, Agnes B. Inman, of Lookout Valley; children, Charles (Kathy) Inman, Florence, Ala., Phillip (Martha) Inman, Birmingham, Ala., Diann (Al) Bennett, Milbrook, Ala., Janice (Gary) Carter, Jasper, Tenn., Deborah (Marty) O'Gwynn, Shawnee, Okla.; 13 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, stepchildren; Janet Counce, Chattanooga, Linda Seale, Chattanooga, Tommy (Jessie) Sue Henry, Tuscaloosa, Ala.; six step-grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at Lookout Valley Baptist Church at 11 a.m., Monday, March 24th, with visitation one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Lamar Moore and Rev. Troy Waliser will officiate.

Burial will be in Forest Hills Cemetery in Chattanooga.

A memorial service will be held at Valdosta Baptist Church, Tuscumbia, Ala., at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, March 24th.

Pallbearers will be Ryan Carter, Chris Inman, Bradley Inman, Matt Bennett, Drew O'Gwynn, Tim O'Gwynn, Scott Campbell, and Chris Smith.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jannell Campbell, Holly Inman, Renee Inman, Matthew Inman, Rebecca Bennett, Bevin Inman, and Bethany Inman.

Rita Jezewski

Rita M. Jezewski, 84, of East Brainerd, passed away, Tuesday, March 18, 2008, in a local hospital.

She was a native of Michigan and had lived in Chicago, Ill., for 50 years before moving to the Chattanooga area 15 years ago. Mrs. Jezewski was of the Catholic faith, was the widow of William Jezewski, and the mother of the late Dr. Don Jezewski.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Richard George of Acworth, Ga.; son and daughter-in-law, Kent and Nancy Jezewski of Homer Glenn, Ill.; son, Terry Jezewski, Chicago, Ill.; 11 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church with Father Manuel Perez officiating.

Interment will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Ruth Gant Lanham, of Chattanooga, departed this life Tuesday, March 11, 2008.

She is now with her Lord, Savior and Friend Jesus Christ. Ruth taught God's Word for more than 60 years and lived his word daily in her life. Lanham's Bible Bookshop was to her a ministry more than a business for 42 years. Her main love in life was Jesus, family, friends and the Bookshop. Her heart's desire was to have her children walk in the will of God, share the Salvation of Jesus Christ with all, study her Bible and care for others.

Ruth is survived by her husband, Rev. John S. Lanham; daughter, Lynda Lanham; and son, Johnny Lanham, Jr.; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She fought the good fight, kept the faith and finished her course, with love mercy and grace, only found in a daily walk with Jesus and His Word.

Jack Lee Jr.

John Pearson Lee Jr., 90, passed away Tuesday, March 18, 2008, in a local hospital.

Mr. Lee was born Sept. 28, 1917, son of the late John P. Lee Sr. and Lucia A. Hudson Lee. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during World War II. During the military, he attended CIC in Maryland and spent most of his service at Martin & Lockheed. He retired from the city of Chattanooga as an accountant and was a member of Chattanooga First Seventh-day Adventist Church.

He was also preceded in death by his brother and sister.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Helen Marie Conner Lee, Collegedale; nephew, John H. Lee, Dallas, Ga.; and niece, Vickie Miller, Winston Salem, N.C.

Memorial services will be held 5:30 p.m. today at Chattanooga First Seventh-day Adventist Church.

The family will receive friends from 4:45-5:30 p.m. today at the church.

Private graveside services will be held at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Cecil Smith

Cecil Edward Smith, of Chattanooga, peacefully passed away on Friday, March 21, 2008.

Mr. Smith was born July 17, 1937, in Lafayette, Ga., to Thomas Cleveland Smith and Myrtle Faye Smith.

Mr. Smith honorably served the country in the U. S. Army from 1954 to 1957. After his discharge from the Army, he came back home to Chattanooga. He then spent time traveling the country, returning again to Chattanooga. He was a member of Red Bank Baptist Church and will be missed greatly by his family and his many friends.

He lived a wonderful life with his beloved wife, Mrs. Patricia Ann Smith.

He is survived by Mrs. Smith, step-daughter, Catherine R. Durham; brother, Wallace Smith; and sister, Alpine Johnson.

Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home with Dr. Dooley officiating.

Burial will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors provided by the American Legion Post 95.

Visitation will be from 9-11:30 a.m. on Monsay at the funeral home.

Carl Jordan

CLEVELAND -- Carl Lee Jordan, 85, went to meet his Lord and Savior on Friday morning, Good Friday, March 21, 2008, at home with family and friends by his side.

He was born April 19th, 1922 in Sale Creek, Tenn., to Carl and Stella Jordan.

A veteran of WWII, 6 amphibious landings in the Pacific, 6 Bronze Stars, and 2 Purple Hearts, he served his country and his Lord. And was a longtime member of the Church of God.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Wilma Jordan; sister, Mary Powell and husband, Waylon; sons, Gary and wife, Karen of Tyrone, Ga.; Steve Jordan of Cleveland, and Mike and wife, Pam Jordan of Knoxville; grandchildren, Elizabeth and husband, Charles Henry, Ryan and wife, Jennifer Jordan, Michael Jordan, Bradley Jordan; and seven great-grandchildren. Special friends Terry and Betty Munn, Marie Saint, Linville and Louise Flowers, Becky and Wayne Moore, and many others.

A Remembrance of Life Service will be conducted at 7 p.m., Sunday from the North Ocoee Chapel of Jim Rush Funeral Homes.

ATHENS -- Donnie L. McCullum, 53, previously of Wisconsin passed away Thursday morning, March 20, 2008 at Athens Regional Medical Center.

COALMONT -- Paul David Meeks, 89, passed away Thursday, March 20, 2008, at Memorial Health Care in Chattanooga.

He was a member of the Coalmont United Methodist Church. He operated Paul D. Meeks Exxon Distributorship for many years in Tracy City.

Mr. Meeks is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Newton and Myrtle Burroughs Meeks; siblings, Nellie M. Scruggs Simons, Lewis Meeks, Stanley Meeks, Earl Meeks, and Ruth M. Baugh.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ellen Brown Meeks of Coalmont; sister, Pearl Meeks Burnette of Chattanooga; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Foster & Lay Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Clayton Jones and Brother Ray Winton officiating.

CLEVELAND -- William Lee Smith, 69, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 21, 2008 from his home.

He was of the Baptist faith.

William was retired from Catnapper and was the former owner of R & S Motors in Cleveland, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Robert and Inez Smith; one son, William Lee Smith Jr.; one sister and one brother.

He is survived by his wife, Roszillie Sims Smith; two sons, Benjamin and Robert Smith; two step-sons, Jeffery and Allen Harden; one daughter, Susan Minton; three step-daughters, Connie Fisher, Savonna Swafford and Elizabeth Lawson; two sisters, Dorothy Hawkins and Betty Smith; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 24, 2008 at 11 a.m. in the Hwy 58 Chapel of Turner Funeral Home with the Rev. David Cross officiating.

He was a native of Haleyville, Ala., was a former resident of Carrollton, Ga., he served in the U.S. Army and was a member of Trenton First Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Sircay and Ada Lucille Batchelor.

Tommy Gaddis

ROSSVILLE -- Tommy L. Gaddis, 70, passed away Wednesday, March 19, 2008, in a local hospital.

He was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga and Rossville areas where he was a member of St. Elmo Church of Christ. Mr. Gaddis was a radio operator for the U.S. Air Force and was a retired machinist with Chattanooga Plating.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra Gaddis.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Ron Burgess, of Ringgold; granddaughter, Dana Burgess, of Ringgold; brother, Gene Gaddis, of East Ridge; and several other children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. in the South Crest Chapel.

Interment will follow in Forest Hills Cemetery.

Willis Kingsley

FLINTSTONE -- Willis Glenn Kingsley, 68, died Wednesday, March 19, 2008, in a local hospital.

A longtime resident of Walker County, Mr. Kingsley was an active member of St. Elmo Avenue Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and basketball coach.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a construction laborer.

Survivors are his wife, Norma Green Kingsley; daughter, Holly Kingsley, Medford, N.J.; sons, Mark Kingsley, Flintstone and Michael (Michelle) Kingsley, Rock Spring; three grandsons, Noah, Ethan and Brice; four sisters, Ruth (Curtis) Wells, Rossville, Ga., Jean (John) Ransom, Rock Spring, Ga., Faye (Fred) Bruning, Kensington, Ga., and JoAnn (Ricky) SantaMaria, Crossville, Tenn.; four brothers, Ira and Ron Kingsley, both of Flintstone, Ray Kingsley, Kensington, Ga., and John (Linda) Kingsley, Jacksonville, Fla.; several nieces and nephews; and friend, Marcus McCamey, Flintstone, Ga.

Services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. in the chapel with Rev. Roger Kittle and Rev. Don Givens officiating.

Burial will be in Lakewood Memory Gardens, South.

Thomas Markham

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Thomas Skiles Markham died Thursday, March 20, 2008, at Vanderbilt University Hospital with his family by his side.

Tommy was born in Louisville, Ky., on Dec. 31, 1934 to the late Mr. And Mrs. Arthur Thomas Markham. He graduated from Choate School, attended Washington and Lee University and graduated from the University of Louisville. He was the founder of Synthetic Weavers, which became Synthetic Industries of Chickamauga, Ga. He was an active member of Church of the Good Sheperd.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Judy Stellings Markham, of Lookout Mountain; daughters, Karen Markham (Rory) Lee, of Georgetown, S.C., Link Markham (Dan) Litaker, of Charlotte, N.C., Ellen Markham (David) Lucas, Charleston, S.C.; sisters, Patricia Markham (David) Nightingale, Leslie Markham (Jay) Norman; and brother, John W. (Lisette) Markham, Louisville, Ky.; and uncle, Frank Saltarelli, Chattanooga; grandchildren, Claire, Tommy and Dannie Litaker, Charlotte, N.C., Stellings Lee, Georgetown, S.C. and Jack, Kathryn and DeeDee Lucas, Charleston, S.C.; several nieces and nephews.

A memorial celebration will be at Church of the Good Sheperd, Lookout Mountain, Tenn., at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 25, with visitation immediately following the services in the parish hall.

Red Roszell

RINGGOLD -- Howard B. "Red" Roszell, 68, died Thursday, March 20, 2008, at his residence.

He was a lifelong resident of North Georgia and had been very active with youth sporting events throughout North Georgia with the Post Recreation Association. Mr. Roszell was former owner and operator of C&R Construction, C&R Railroad Co., The Lee Company, J.C. Talee Inc., and Township Service Corporation. He was a founder and director to the former Community Federal. Mr. Roszell was a former member of Fort Oglethorpe Kiwanis Club, former member of the board of Hutcheson Medical Center, and member of Battlefield Golf and Country Club.

Survivors are his wife, Carolyn Tankersley Roszell; sons, Howard J.R. (Sharon) Roszell, Ringgold, Nicholas Lee Roszell, Ringgold; daughter, Tammy (Bobby) Crowley, Ringgold; mother, Irene Roszell Taylor, East Ridge; brother, Gerald (Betty) Roszell, Rossville; sisters, Wanda (Bill) Owens, Rossville, Sandy (Jerry) McDaniel, Jacksonville, Fla.; grandchild, Howard Brason Roszell.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. today in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Colin Crosen officiating.

FORT PAYNE -- Hubert W. Johnson, 85, passed away Friday, March 21, 2008.
