The story has not changed in more than 2,000 years, but the saga of Jesus’ last days on earth never grows wearisome for Christians.
On Saturday, more than 9,000 spectators attended the 13th annual “SonRise Resurrection Pageant” staged by Southern Adventist University and the Collegedale Seventh-day Adventist Church.
More than 500 costumed cast members depicted Roman legionnaires, angels and common people from the time of Jesus as they performed six scenes recounting events related to what is now known as Easter.
“We want it to allow people to experience what it might have been like in Jesus’ day,” said Joylynn Michals, a volunteer and director of the market.
Actors playing the role of Jesus led crowds of pageantgoers through that recreated street market, to the Last Supper and beyond.
After witnessing his night of doubt and faith in the Garden of Gethsemane, the crowd looked on as the Roman Pontius Pilate condemned Jesus to a realistic crucifixion reenactment. The pageant ended with a theatrical production that depicted the resurrection.
Billy Noll, of Cloudland, Ga., who was attending the pageant for the first time, said, “The Lord has to be pleased with this performance, it will touch a lot of people.”
