BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Louisville’s 78-48 dismantling of Oklahoma in the second round of the East Regional was barely over when Cardinals reserve forward Terrance Farley was asked about facing Tennessee on Thursday night in the Sweet 16.
“We know they're a good team said the Cardinals senior. “More like a great team. But I'm sure we can compete with them. It will be a great match-up at each position.”
According to CBS, the match-up will begin around 10 p.m. Thursday at Charlotte's Bobcats Arena. The first game of the evening will pit top-seeded North Carolina against fourth-seeded Washington State at roughly 7:30.
The East Regional was the only bracket to have all four of its top seeds advance through the opening two rounds. UNC will enter with a 34-2 mark, UT at 31-4, Louisville at 26-8 and Washington State at 26-8.
“I've watched Tennessee many times on TV this season,” said Louisville coach Rick Pitino, who was 14-3 against the Vols when he coached at Kentucky and is 2-0 against them at U of L.
“They have tremendous athletes. It's a fun style of play. Players like playing that style. It brings a lot of energy to the program. We play a different style altogether, but we both want the same (fast-paced) outcome.”
What this game won't bring, Pitino predicts, is a lot of tickets for the Vols’ and Cards’ rabid followings.
“Tennessee has a great fan following, and so do we,” said Pitino. “But I've got an idea that most of those tickets are going to wind up in the hands of North Carolina fans. I just hope our fans can get a few of them.”
