Governor Bredesen hears caregiver concerns on long-term care

Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen led a roundtable discussion on long-term care at St. Barnabas Senior Living Services’ new skilled nursing facility this afternoon, responding to concerns from area caregivers, social workers and providers of long-term care services.

Panelists included Chattanooga Mayor Ron Littlefield and Hamilton County Mayor Claude Ramsey, as well as representatives from Alexian Brothers’ PACE program, the Southeast Tennessee Area Agency on Aging and Disability and the Tennessee AARP. A number of community members caring for elderly or disabled family members were also members of the panel.

Gov. Bredesen discussed his proposed Long-Term Care Community Choices Act. The legislation is designed in part to facilitate access to the home and community-based care waiver, which the governor said can be a cost-effective alternative to nursing home care.
