Georgia Bingham
Georgia Lee Bingham, 90, of Red Bank, went home to join her beloved late husband of 70 years on Easter Sunday, March 23, 2008.
Georgia was a longtime resident of the Chattanooga area and a former employee with Miller Bros. downtown. She was a member of Rivermont Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil D. Bingham; parents, Tillman and Lucille Wilson; and siblings, Jack, Paul and Dorothy Jean.
Georgia is survived by her son, Charles "Ed" (Betty) Bingham; three grandchildren, Chris, Jennifer and Julie; niece, Linda (Rick) Watts and their daughter, Lindsay.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Tony Walliser and the Rev. Eddie Wilson officiating.
Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. today and 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.

George Blair Sr.
George W. Blair Sr. went home to be with Lord on Saturday, March 22, 2008, at the age of 86.
He was a loving husband of 62 years, a devoted father, grandfather, uncle, brother-in-law, friend, citizen and patriot. As husband, father and grandfather, he was someone more special than words. His love was mixed with friendship and a million favorite memories that will always last. He was a hand within your hand enfolded with love and understanding. He gave you a feeling that made you wonder what you would ever do without him and no one was loved so dearly.
He saw extensive combat as a paratrooper in World War II with the 82nd Airborne Division, the 101st Airborne Division and the 1st Special Forces.
He was awarded the Purple Heart, the EAME Theater Ribbon with five bronze stars, the Distinguished Unit Citation, Bronze Star Medal, to name a few.
He retired from the Electric Power Board after 29 years of service in the Chattanooga System Operations Division. He volunteered for the VA and was the Senior Volunteer Coordinator for the Chattanooga Outpatient Clinic with over 10,000 hours of service.
He was a member of the Shriners, the Scottish Rite, York Rite, VFW Post 1289, American Legion Post 95, 40-8 Box Car Association, Military Order of the Purple Heart and the 82nd Airborne Division Association Alvin C. York Chapter.
He was preceded in death by son, Bobby Lee Blair.
He is survived by his wife, Katherine Blair; son, George Blair Jr.; daughter, Donna S. Blair; granddaughter, Samantha Kaj Blair; grandson, George W. Blair III; and other family members.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Chattanooga National Cemetery with the Rev. Billy Dean officiating.

Helen Lucile Chandler, 63, of East Ridge, died Monday March 24, 2008, at her home after an extended illness.
She was born June 3, 1944, in Bakersfield, Calif., to Jack and Mary Chandler. Her father was a flight instructor in the U.S. Army Air Corps, after his discharge they returned to Chattanooga.
Helen attended Margaret Wilson School, Edmonson Junior High, Chattanooga High School and McKenzie Business School. She worked for Provident and Wal-Mart.
Preceding her in death are her grandparents, John and Lola Cross Chandler, W.L. Ball and her very special grandmother, Lucy Tudor Ball; her father, Jack William Chandler; and brother, Jack William Chandler Jr.
Helen is survived by her loving mother, Mary Ball Chandler, of Cleveland, Tenn.; two daughters, Janet Lynn Allen and her husband, Tim, and Annette Lee Gray, all of Chattanooga; four grandchildren, Brandon and Kymberly Generazio-Allen, Hailey and Jared Gray; sister, Susan (Bob) Card, of Cleveland, and Jim (Leslie) Chandler, of Chattanooga.
Graveside services will held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 27, at Forest Hills Cemetery.
There will be no visitation.

Lula M. Hughley departed this life on Friday, March 21, 2008.

William McDaris Jr.
William L. "Bill" McDaris Jr., of Chattanooga, died on Sunday, March 23, 2008. He was 83 years of age.
Bill was a lifelong member of Morris Hill Baptist Church. He was retired as manager of transportation for the Hamilton County Department of Education. He was past president of Tennessee Association of Pupil Transportation and had been employed in the Tennessee motor freight industry for 30 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in both Europe and the Phillipines. He retired from Tennessee Defense Forces with rank of lieutenant colonel.
Mr. McDaris is survived by his wife of 58 years, Bettye Jean Fields McDaris; three daughters, Sharon McDaris (Tom) Lewis, of Chattanooga, Debbie McDaris (K.C.) Roberson, of St. Joseph, Tenn., and Susan McDaris (Rick) Durand, of Decatur, Tenn.; one son, Michael (Linda) McDaris, of Ringgold, Ga. Survivors also include 10 grandchildren, Heather Lewis Carter, Katie Lewis Rutledge, Robert McDaris, Lisa McDaris Dalton, James Kilbourne, Lauren Durand Haun, Russell Durand, Rebecca Roberson, Christopher Roberson, Nicholas Roberson and Catherine Roberson; and one great-grandchild, Carter Haun.

Margaret Erwin Monroe, 85, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away Sunday, March 23, 2008, at Memorial North Park in Hixson.
A native of Decatur, Tenn., and longtime resident of Soddy-Daisy, she was a daughter of the late John Bryant Erwin Sr. and Sarah Orilla Crisp Erwin.
She was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force as a medical technician during WWII and was a hairdresser for over 50 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel D. Monroe; four sisters, Ruby Woodcock, Zella Ziegler, Betty Erwin and Dorothy McGullion; three brothers, Raymond, Robert and Doug Erwin.
Survivors include one sister and brother-in-law, Edna and J.C. Vaughn, of Athens, Tenn.; four brothers and sisters-in-law, John B. Erwin Jr. and wife, Estella, of Hixson, Merritt Erwin and wife, Barbara, of Cleveland, Tenn., Marshall Erwin and wife, LaVerne, of Calhoun, Tenn., Dean Erwin and wife, Denise, of Calhoun; several nieces and nephews.

Ron Stewart
Dennis Ronald "Ron" Stewart, paddled his last river on Saturday, March 22, 2008, at his home on the campus of Baylor School in Chattanooga.
Along the way he inspired generations of all ages.
Mr. Stewart was born Oct. 25, 1949, in Natchitoches, La. Ron majored in math and physics at Tulane, won the senior physics prize and graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He went on to earn his master's degree in physics at the University of Maryland. His first teaching position was with the Maret School in Washington, D.C., instructing math and physics. Then, in 1981, he joined the faculty of Baylor School. During his 26 years at Baylor, he taught math, was a baseball coach, kayak instructor, dorm parent and had been the head of Baylor's math department since 1993. His vivacious nature, his passion for learning and his dedication to his profession has shaped Baylor and thousands of young lives in a way that cannot be duplicated.
Ron was one of the nation's most prominent whitewater kayakers as both an explorer of rivers and as an advocate of the wild and scenic. He was responsible for the earliest complete runs of Cain Creek in the North Chickamauga Creek watershed, Bear Creek of Cloudland Canyon and several others. As a past board member of both American Whitewater and the North Chickamauga Creek Conservancy, Ron spent many tireless years negotiating access, water releases and public land acquisition on behalf of the whitewater community and general public. Notable achievements include negotiating access to creeks on public and private land in the southeast, helping gain water releases on Tallulah gorge in Georgia, and 15 years of tireless effort that was instrumental to the protection of thousands of acres in the North Chickamauga Creek watershed near Chattanooga. His actions and writings have been chronicled in newspapers, magazines, journals and videos. In October 2007, Ron received the rarely awarded Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Whitewater organization in recognition for his longtime dedication to the preservation and access of whitewater rivers.
Preceding him in death was his father, Q.L. Stewart; and brother, Bill Stewart.
Mr. Stewart is survived by Lorraine Peninguy Stewart, his wife of 28 years; daughter, Michelle Peninguy Stewart; son, Jeffrey Peninguy-Stewart; mother, Mollie Stewart, of Shreveport; sister, Jan Taylor, of Shreveport; and nephew, Danny Harrison.
Ron shared his life adventures with many friends.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today, March 25, in the chapel at Baylor School.
Mr. Stewart will be cremated in a private memorial service.

Loretta Strange
Loretta Hall Strange, 90, a recent resident of Hickory Valley Retirement Center and Life Care of East Ridge, passed away on Sunday, March 23, 2008.
Mrs. Strange was born on Sept. 18, 1917, in Aurora, Mo., to Harvey and Verba Ipock Hall. She grew up in Tulsa, Okla., and was the beloved wife of Eury Elston Strange. Loretta was a homemaker and a member of Brainerd United Methodist Church, where she was active in the United Methodist Women and a teacher for the Friendship Adult Sunday School Class. At one time she was a Red Cross volunteer as a Grey Lady and served several years as a volunteer telephone counselor for Contact of Chattanooga.
She leaves to cherish her memory her children and their spouses: Leslie Ann and Robert J. McManus, of Lakeland, Fla., Terry and Janet Strange, of Cartersville, Ga., and Eury Bruce Strange, of Cartersville, Ga.; as well as grandchildren, Scott McManus, of Seattle, Wash., and Eric and Melissa Strange, of Tucker, Ga.; and her dear friend, Eva Phillips, of Chattanooga.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

Elizabeth "Betty" B. Westbrook, 80, of Chattanooga, beloved mother, sister and neighbor, died on Saturday, March 22, 2008.
Betty was a 1945 graduate of Central High School. She was a floral designer in the Chattanooga area for several years, was head teller at Pioneer Bank downtown for several years and worked with the Tennessee Aquarium financial department as a volunteer. Betty was a member of First Christian Church. She was a member of the Pilot Club. Betty enjoyed boating with her husband after retirement and loved her dog, Princess.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Riley A. Westbrook; and sons, Allen and Wayne Westbrook.
Survivors include her sons: James and Richard Westbrook; brother, Douglas R. Beville II; four grandchildren, James R. Westbrook Jr., Alicia Westbrook, Tony Westbrook and Pam Westbrook; nieces, Laura Beville; and Amy Beville Elder; and nephew, Doug Beville, III.

Interment will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in Chattanooga National Cemetery with Michael Wilson, Mitchell Gill, Michael Oswalt, Steven Dycus, Lee Sawyer, Jason Young, Matt Roberts and Logan Sawyer serving as pallbearers.

She was retired from the state of Tennessee with 30 years service in the women's prison system. She was born on Feb. 28, 1920, to Victor and Ruby Swindell Smith, who preceded her in death along with her son, Stephen Stampfli; and brother, Lester Smith.

FLINTSTONE -- Floyd Guffey, 80, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Easter morning, Sunday, March 23, 2008.
He was born in Walker County to the late William Estel and Alice Moore Guffey. He was a lifelong resident of Walker County. He was the former choir director for 41 years for the following Baptist churches Robertsville, Old Bethel and Liberty, all in Chickamauga, Ga.; Memorial, James Street and New Hope, all in Rossville; and Mount Vernon in Tunnel Hill, Ga. He also had led the singing for several tent revivals in North Georgia. He was a current member and deacon at Old Bethel Baptist Church in Chickamauga.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Emory, Curtis Sr., Tom, Lloyd and Franklin Guffey; and a nephew, Wayne Guffey.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Elizabeth Ellis Guffey; and his mother-in-law, Ora Lee Ellis, both of Flintstone; several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Short was born in Chattanooga to Roger and Eliza VanWinkle. He was a member of Elizabeth Lee United Methodist Church and was a WWII U. S. Army veteran.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Davis Short.

RINGGOLD -- Thomas LeRoy Swearingen, 76, passed away Sunday, March 23, 2008, at a local hospital.
A resident of the Ringgold area for the past 24 years he was formerly of Mount Juliet, Tenn. Tom was retired from the Tennessee National Guard where he served for 42 1/2 years during this time he served as facility manager at the Catoosa Area Training Center. He was a member of Ringgold First Baptist Church, where he served as a member of the choir, deacon and former treasurer of the church. Tom formerly served on the Ringgold City Council as vice mayor, past master of Mount Juliet Masonic Lodge 642, was a 32-degree Mason, and also served with Habitat for Humanity.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Lura Brown Swearingen; two sisters, Martha Lynn Seaton and Frances Mae Norman; and two brothers, Francis B. Swearingen and Charles B. Swearingen.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Ruby Adams Swearingen, of Ringgold; three children, Ruby Marie Swearingen, of Leesburg, Fla., Francis Benjamin (Joan) Swearingen, of Mount Juliet, Tenn., and Martha Lynn Davis of LaFayette, Ga.; brother, William J. Swearingen, of Cleveland, Tenn.; four sisters, Betty Ann Rice and Grace Fults, both of Chattanooga, and Mildred Green and Becky Kelsay, both of Hixson; three grandchildren, Charles K. Zimmer, of Terre Haute, Ind., Miles Laney, of Macon, Ga., and Kaley June Swearingen, of Mount Juliet, Tenn.; 19 living nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Mrs. Cole was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Paul Frederick Cole; parents, T. Walter and Susanna Reeves Moore; brothers, Daniel Moore and Claudia Moore.
She is survived by her dedicated sister, Ollie Barham, of Bridgeport; and she will be greatly missed by several nieces and a nephew. She was an inspiration to all who knew and loved her.
