Hammond gets GOP sheriff nomination

by Jacqueline Koch

Former Hamilton County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Jim Hammond captured the county Republican Party’s nomination for sheriff tonight, defeating state Rep. Vince Dean, R-East Ridge, in a run-off election by 14 votes.

After a vote among five candidates yielded no majority, delegates cast votes again for the top two candidates.

Mr. Hammond, who previously ran for sheriff as a Democrat, said he plans to begin putting together a team of advisers as soon as possible to look at issues and his responses to them.

“I love the police; I love the people; I want to serve them well,” he said.
