Shulman reportedly meets with TCU officials about coaching job

A Texas newspaper is reporting that Mocs basketball coach John Shulman has met with Texas Christian University officials on a vacant head coaching position.

The Ft. Worth Star-Telegram said the UTC coach met earlier this week with TCU athletics director Danny Morrison.

Wofford athletics director Richard Johnson said coach Shulman would be a great fit for the vacant coaching position at TCU.

Mr. Morrison was the athletics director and senior vice president at Wofford when Mr. Johnson was the head coach and Mr. Shulman was an assistant.

“I am very happy at Chattanooga,” Shulman said in a statement released by UTC. “I love the school. I love my job. I love our kids. I love the city.

“Danny Morrison gave me my first job out of college. If Danny Morrison calls and wants to talk, out of respect to him, I am going to talk.”

That the meeting occurred in Texas was a result of Shulman’s respect for Morrison.

“Danny Morrison is in Fort Worth,” Shulman said. “That’s where he wanted to talk.”

Johnson echoed Shulman’s statements.

“Johnny has always told me that he’s happy in Chattanooga, he likes Rick Hart (UTC athletic director) and loves his team,” Mr. Johnson said this morning. “If I’m Danny, I’m looking for a young, aggressive, up-and-coming coach. There are several, and John is one.”

“There’s a lot to be said about knowing the guy you hire,” Mr. Johnson said. “One of the things that Danny values over anything is work ethic. If you know John, that’s a good description of John.”
