Five questions with ... Chattanooga Christian tennis coach Sue Webb
Webb is the coach of both CCS tennis teams that have been dominant in the area and the state. The Lady Chargers come into the season as three-time Class AA state team champions and the Chargers finished as runners-up in Murfreesboro.
1. How was your offseason?
“We have few players that play tournaments, and some of the other kids play other sports. My offseason was good because I got to work on my home-based business, Juice Plus.”
2. The girls are three-time Class AA state champions coming into this season. Any pressure on them? How are they looking right now?
“No, I don’t think there’s any pressure because it’s a different team. It’s not the same team as last year; it’s a different team. I don’t think there’s any pressure; we’ll just take it one match at a time and go from there.”
3. Will Reynolds, who played No. 1 for the Chargers two years ago, is back at the school as a junior and returned to the team this year. What’s it like having him back?
“It’s great to have Will back at CCS. He’s brought a lot to school, as far as his spiritual leadership, and he’s brought a lot to the community at CCS. He’s a great character.”
4. The boys’ team graduated most of its starting lineup, including No. 1 player Eric Chastain. Any promising newcomers to the boys’ and girls’ top six this year?
“We’ve got some freshmen on both teams in the top six, and it should be fun to see how they develop over the next few years. They’ve got good work ethics, they always want to improve and they work hard.”
5. An assistant coach has worked with the boys’ team the past two years. Who is working with the Chargers this year?
“I have a great parent volunteer this year, Tim Scholl, who’s (player) Holly Scholl’s dad. He’s been helping with practices and during matches, and I’m also there as well with the boys. It’s a great help. It’s nice to have another body and another set of eyes watching the guys and working with them and me working with the girls as well.”
