Shulman not leaving; TCU hiring Christian

John Shulman hosted a family gathering in Chattanooga on Friday night.

There will be many more to come.

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga basketball coach told the Times Free Press he is not headed to Texas Christian University.

TCU is expected to hire Kent State coach Jim Christian to take over its basketball program, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and FoxSports.com.

Shulman met with TCU athletic director Danny Morrison earlier this week. They have known each other for more than 20 years since they met at Wofford College.

“Danny was the first person that believed in me and gave me a college job,” Shulman said. “I never went on (TCU’s) campus. I never got the chance to take (my wife) Amy down there.

“So I don’t know what would have happened.”

Shulman said he has spent most of the offseason recruiting for next seaso and the only time he’s taken off was to visit his old friend in the Lone Star State.

“It would have to be pretty special to get my family to leave Chattanooga,” Shulman said. “I am actually one relieved and one relaxed human tonight. I’ll get to go to the circus with my youngest tomorrow.”

Shulman said he and UTC athletic director Rick Hart have discussed a variety of issues involving the improvement of the basketball program.

“Rick has handled everything great,” Shulman said near the end of Friday’s NCAA tournament games. “I love it here. I would love to develop here what Davidson has done for that community.”
