LaFayette carpet plant fire darkens sky, forces evacuations

Smoke from a fire inside a carpet manufacturing plant filled the sky this afternoon in LaFayette, Ga., according to Walker County 911 dispatchers.

LaFayette Public Safety Director Tommy Freeman said the fire occurred about 4 p.m. in the Quality Carpet Cushion facility on McCarter Road.

Firefighters from the cities of LaFayette and Rossville as well as East Ridge and volunteer firefighters from Walker, Chattooga and Catoosa counties responded to the blaze, officials said.

No injuries were reported in the fire, but firefighters and additional crews were called to the scene late Sunday, officials said.
