Golf Mocs get top spot at Furman

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga golf team captured the Furman Intercollegiate with junior Jonathan Hodge winning medalist honors.

Hodge shot a 3-under par 213 over three rounds at the Furman University Golf Course, and the Mocs shot an 874, three strokes better than No. 23 Clemson.

“He’s played this course a few times and he was patient and careful where he hit the ball,” UTC coach Mark Guhne said. “He put the ball in the right places and he was rewarded for it.”

The 13th-ranked Mocs beat No. 16 South Carolina by eight shots in undesirable and windy conditions.

“We thought we’d given it away but the boys hung in there,” Guhne said. “Every time we play against a top team, it’s good. This validates we are where we should be.”

UTC’s Ben Rickett tied for 10th at 220, Fredrik Qvicker tied for 14th and Derek Rende tied for 16th at 222. J.T. Clendenin shot 223, and Eric Forsman shot 224 as an individual.

“Going in to the last round almost all of the guys were tied for 11th,” Guhne said. “When you have five guys up there, that’s hard to beat. When you have that many guys playing well, it’s pretty neat.”
