The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball team remained perfect in Southern Conference play Sunday, wrapping up a three-game sweep over Western Carolina at Jim Frost Stadium.
The Lady Mocs (24-14, 6-0) opened the day by getting the final out in the opening game, which had been suspended Saturday because of rain, to complete at 3-1 victory. They followed that will a 7-4 victory in the second game and a 4-2 win in the final game with the Catamounts (6-23, 0-9).
Sophomore pitcher Brooke Loudermilk (11-6) came away with two wins over the weekend, and she also recorded her third save of the season in the final game of the series. She allowed only one earned run over 92⁄3 innings and recorded 16 strikeouts. Michelle Fuzzard earned the win in the final game of the series, pitching six innings and recording six strikeouts.
Western Carolina first baseman Mollie Fowler hit the only two home runs of the series, but WCU had little other offensive success on the weekend.
UTC spread the offense around for the series, with Toni Hutchison, Tiffany Baker and Ashlan Clarkson each getting four hits over the three games. Eight different Lady Mocs recorded RBIs during the weekend.
UTC extended its winning streak to eight games, its longest streak since 2005. With the sweep, the Lady Mocs took sole possesion of first in the SoCon.
The Lady Mocs return to action Wednesday when they will host Alabama-Birmingham for a doubleheader at Jim Frost Stadium starting at 4 p.m.
