Ramsey touts Hammond for sheriff

by Michael Davis

Hamilton County Mayor Claude Ramsey today voiced his support for GOP sheriff nominee Jim Hammond.

Mr. Hammond, former chief deputy of the sheriff’s department, is facing Democratic Hamilton County Commissioner Greg Beck and independent candidate Jim Winters in the Aug. 7 election.

“I don’t have anything bad to say about Greg Beck,” Mr. Ramsey told the Hamilton County Pachyderm Club this afternoon. “But the best man for that job is Jim Hammond.”

Mr. Hammond was selected as the nominee during a county Republican Party convention last week.

The candidates are running for the seat after former Sheriff Billy Long resigned amid various federal gun, drug, extortion and money laundering charges.

Mr. Beck has listed raising sheriff’s department morale, school safety and dealing with jail overcrowding as major priorities in his campaign.

Mr. Hammond today spoke briefly after Mr. Ramsey. The GOP sheriff nominee said he’d save issues for the Pachyderm Club until he speaks to the organization in two weeks, but asked those in attendance to support him.

“I hope you’ll rally behind me,” he said.
