Tennessee: Georgia hosts TTU in ’09
Tennessee Tech has agreed to play Georgia in 2009, which would be Matthew Stafford’s senior season at quarterback and Knowshon Moreno’s junior season at tailback.
“I played them when I was at Vanderbilt and twice when I was at UAB, and it doesn’t matter,” Tech coach Watson Brown said Wednesday. “You can change the jersey numbers, but it’s the same bodies. The one thing I can say about Georgia is that every time I’ve been, there has been a good-looking body in that jersey.”
Georgia will host Tennessee Tech on Nov. 7, which is between SEC games against Florida and Auburn.
The Bulldogs had been seeking a 12th opponent to round out next year’s schedule, which contains other nonconference matchups against Arizona State, Oklahoma State and Georgia Tech. The Golden Eagles were looking for another game against a nationally touted program, having played at Auburn last season and scheduling Louisville for later this year.
Tennessee Tech lost 35-3 to Tommy Tuberville’s Tigers, but Brown said his kids were thrilled by the experience.
“Tommy took his first offense out around the middle of the second quarter and was good to us,” he said. “We played well, but I think Tommy helped us in the game. It was something our kids will always remember.”
The biggest highlight of the Auburn trip may have been the day before the game, when Brown allowed his players to walk around Jordan-Hare Stadium.
“A lot of our kids took pictures,” he said. “They had a blast. We didn’t work out. We just took our buses from the hotel to the stadium to let them walk around a little bit, and I’m sure we’ll do the same thing at Georgia.”
Brown has never won in seven tries against the Bulldogs but came close in 2003, when his Blazers dropped a 16-13 decision against the eventual SEC East champions.
Big-play autographs
The Sports Stop store in Hamilton Place will hold its annual Georgia football autograph session May 24 from 1-4 p.m.
“We’re bringing in three guys, and the theme is going to be three of Georgia’s biggest plays,” store owner Tim McFather said Wednesday. “It’s also a border-type thing, because Georgia beat Florida, Tennessee and Alabama on these plays.”
Signing autographs will be former receiver Lindsay Scott, former fullback Verron Haynes and former receiver Mikey Henderson. Scott had a 93-yard touchdown reception from Buck Belue to beat Florida in 1980, Haynes a 6-yard scoring reception from David Greene to beat Tennessee in 2001, and Henderson a 25-yard winning catch in overtime last year at Alabama.
McFather said autographs for Scott and Haynes are $25 apiece and $10 for Henderson, and a ticket for all three costs $49. Each player is limited to 300 signatures, so McFather is urging people to purchase tickets quickly at 510-9335.
Stafford, Moreno eyed
According to Todd McShay’s 2009 NFL mock draft on ESPN.com, Stafford and Moreno could be top-10 picks if they make the ’08 college season their last. McShay has Stafford going third overall to Kansas City and Moreno 10th to the New York Jets.
His top two projections are Southern Cal defensive tackle Fili Moala to Atlanta and Georgia Tech defensive end Michael Johnson to Detroit. Other SEC underclassmen McShay has penciled in his top 10 are Auburn defensive tackle Sen’Derrick Marks, Alabama offensive tackle Andre Smith and Florida quarterback Tim Tebow.
