Maizette Coleman

Maizette Elizabeth Coleman, 79, of East Ridge, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 30, 2008.

A longtime resident of Chattanooga, Mrs. Coleman was a member of Temple Baptist Church. She had served as church pianist in many churches in Chattanooga and Alabama as well as played for singing schools. She loved to be involved in church activities and was a wonderful cook. She was a prayer warrior and loved her Lord. Before she left this life surrounded by her family she told them “Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, I’m Going Home.”

She was preceded in death in 2000 by her husband, Warren B. Coleman.

She is survived by her loving daughter and son-in-law, Mamie and Roger Nicholson, East Ridge; two granddaughters, Stacy (Bobby) Lee, Chattanooga and Tammy Pangle, Trenton, Ga.; sister, Ruby Pruett, Cleveland; brother, Herman Willborn, Auburn, Ala.; four great-grandsons, Ryan, Justin, Tanner and Parker; several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the chapel with the Rev. Chuck Willborn and the Rev. Terry Trivette officiating.

Burial will be at Lakewood Memory Gardens, East, with Winston Love, Ed Pruett, Dub Jones, Paul Rogers, Gilman Johnson and Lannie Johnson serving as pallbearers.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Hospital.

Ophelia Berry Davis, 93, of Chattanooga, passed away on Thursday, May 1, 2008, at a local assisted living facility.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.

Carole Ewton, 73, of Red Bank, passed away Thursday, May 1, 2008.

LaToya Jones

LaToya Hampton Jones, 30, passed away Friday, April 25, 2008, in a local hospital.

She was a member of Grace Baptist Tabernacle. LaToya lived in Nashville for seven years where she was employed as a legislative auditor. At the time of her death, she was employed as an internal auditor for the city of Chattanooga. She was a 1995 graduate of Brainerd High School where she was a first chair saxophonist. She is a 1999 graduate of Fisk University, Cum Laude, earning a bachelor’s degree in accounting; she received her master’s degree in business administration from Tennessee State University in 2001. LaToya also held the honor and distinction of being a studied and designated Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE). She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Elgin and Ruth Armstrong.

Survivors include husband, Marlon Jones Sr.; son, Marlon Jones Jr.; stepchildren, LaDarrius Jackson, Shamiyah and NaTasia Jones; mother, Cassandra (Elmer) Leak, of Chattanooga; father, Thomas Hampton, of Birmingham; grandmother, Mattie Chatmon; brother, James Chapman; stepsiblings, Marcus Leak, Yolanda (Rod) Daniel, Vanessa (Andrae) Kelly, Arlington, Texas, April (Michael) Holloway, Detroit, Mich.; mother-in-law, Lula Reedus, Town Creek, Ala.; two brothers-in-law, a devoted friend, Meika Moore, Louisville, Ky.; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held today, May 2, at 1 p.m. at Grace Baptist Tabernacle, Pastor Marshall Robinson officiating.

A family visitation and the The Delta Sigma Theta Sorority’s Omega Omega ceremony were held at the funeral home on Thursday.

Interment: Lakewood Memorial Gardens.

Dorothy Sue “Dodie” Justice, 47, of Lakesite, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 1, 2008.

Dodie was a longtime resident of the Chattanooga area and a 1978 graduate of Hixson High School. She was currently employed with Wal-Mart in Soddy-Daisy and was of the Baptist faith.

Dodie was preceded in death by her father, Edward L. Odom; and a niece, Valerie Marie Waters.

She is survived by her husband of 18 years, Steve Justice; son, Ryan; mother, Kathryne Odom; seven siblings, Arvel LeBatard, Diane Odom, Nita (Steve) Mezick, Yvonne (Joey) Lisenby; Ginger Odom, Edie (Luther) Waters and Edward Nealy (Barbara) Odom; father and mother-in-law, Edwin W. and Virginia Jo Justice; brother-in-law, Michael (Charlotte) Justice; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Dorothy Lasater

Dorothy J. Lasater, 94, of Chattanooga, passed away Wednesday, April 30, 2008, in a local hospital.

She was a longtime member of Red Bank Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Lasater retired from Moccasin Bend State Mental Health Center as executive secretary to the administrator. She was the wife of the late T.M. Lasater.

Survivors include her nieces, Gayle Underwood, of Chattanooga and Patty (Dennis) Payne, of Marietta, Ga.; and nephew, Ben (Midgie) Johnston, of Chattanooga.

Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday in Hamilton Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Forest Prosser officiating.

Madeleine McKinney, of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, May 1, 2008, at Life Care of East Ridge.

She was a charter member of Brainerd Hills Baptist Church and worked for Davenport Hosiery Mills.

She was preceded in death by her parents, C. A. McKinney and Pearl North; brothers, C.A. McKinney and Roy McKinney.

She is survived by her sister, Wanda Greene, of East Ridge; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Saturday, May 3, 2008, at 1 p.m. in the J. Avery Bryan Chapel.

John Richard Pell, 41, of Chattanooga, died Tuesday, April 29, 2008, in a local hospital.

Helen Louise Roberson, 76, of Chattanooga, died Thursday, May 1, 2008, at her home.

Mrs. Roberson was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga and was of the Baptist faith. She was a daughter of the late Clifford and Mary Crisp and was also preceded in death by a daughter, Deborah Roberson.

Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Bill Roberson; son, Jeff Roberson; two sisters, Joyce Williams and Jane Womack, all of Chattanooga.

Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Richie Womack officiating.

Peggy Stagmaier

Peggy Steele Stagmaier died at home Wednesday, April 30, 2008, after a long illness.

She was born on June 28, 1930 in Knoxville. She was preceded in death by her parents, George Alexander and Ethel Cox Steele; and her brother, Jack Steele.

She attended Virginia Intermont College and graduated from the University of Tennessee Chattanooga. She was an avid golfer and a gifted artist. Throughout her life she was dedicated to many civic activities and served on the board of Walden’s Ridge Emergency Services. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and friend.

She is survived by her children, Kurt (Vicki) Stagmaier and Leslie (Jim) Thomas; grandchildren, Steele Thomas Marcoux, Katherine Mills Thomas, Lauren Stagmaier, Erin Stagmaier.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 3, 2008, at Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church with Dr. Bill Dudley officiating.

Following the service the family will receive friends in the Greeting Room at the Church.

William Terrell Sr.

William Harris “Bill” Terrell Sr., 81, of Chattanooga, passed away on Thursday, May 1, 2008, at his residence.

He began his working career with family owned Terrell Electric Co. He went on to retire from Nation Hosiery Mill where he worked as the production control manager, and finally retired after 17 years with Bi-Lo Supermarket.

Bill brightened other’s lives through his never-ending smile, his love of life and animals, and his wonderful sense of humor. He graduated from McCallie Military Academy and the University of Chattanooga. Bill served in the U.S. Navy during WWII.

He was preceded in death by parents, Charles and Marguerite Terrell; wife, Florence Emily “Pat” Terrell; wife, Jane Millard Terrell; son, William Harris Terrell Jr.; granddaughter, Monica Christina Stokely; brothers, John and Emmett Terrell; and brother-in-law, Trit Epple.

Bill is survived by daughters, Nancy Lee Terrell and Margaret Lucy Stokely; stepdaughter, Sandra (Robert) Kilgore; stepson, Phillip (Stella) Peck; sister, Lib Epple; brother, Joe (Ruby) Terrell; grandsons, Murray (DeDe) Stokely, Nicolas (Isabel) Perkins, Timothy (Julie) Moore and Kimberly (Robbie) McCoy; five great-granddaughters; two great-grandsons; a special cousin, Bonnie Winikates; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Corine Welbon

Corine Cameron Welbon, 100, of Chattanooga, peacefully passed away Tuesday, April 29, 2008, while at home with her family.

She served as a foster mother, bible teacher, beautician and an advisory council member for Chattanooga Public Schools. In 1983, the Honorable Corine Welbon was appointed Colonel by former Tennessee Governor Lamar Alexander. She was one of the few women allowed to enter the oval office to protest the Equal Rights Amendment during the Carter Administration. She was a longtime member of Ridgedale Church of Christ and was known to be a “walking bible”.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cornelius Welbon; parents, Ada Cunningham and Phillip Cameron Sr.; and siblings, Phillip Cameron Jr., Lovejoy Cameron, Jasper Cameron, Mary Cameron, Marie Cameron Render, Carrie Cameron Johnson and Elijah Cameron Jr.

She will be greatly missed by her daughter, Willena Welbon (David Sr.) Woods; grandchildren, Jasmine and David Woods Jr.; three siblings, Waverly Cameron Sr., Addie Mae Cameron Anderson, all of Chattanooga and Alberta Cameron Jones, of Trotwood, Ohio; a host of other relatives and close friends.

Funeral: Saturday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Taylor Funeral Home with Brother John R. Taylor Sr. officiating.

Burial: Southview Cemetery in LaGrange, Ga.

The body will lie in state today after noon at the funeral home.

JASPER — Joy “Judy” C. Caldwell, 83, died Thursday, May 1, 2008, at Memorial Hospital.

She was the daughter of the late Joe and Nola Coburn. She lived most of her life in the Marion County area and worked at South Pittsburg Municipal Hospital. She was a member of the Church of God.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Caldwell; brother, Carl Coburn; sisters, Zell Hookey, Nell Powell and Rosalee Allison.

Survivors include son, Terry (Nancy) Siler, of Orme, Tenn.; and daughters, Gail (Bill) Hutchins, Kathy (LeRoy) Hotzclaw and Carol (Con) Raulston, of Jasper, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Greg (Stephanie) Hutchins, Ken (Andrea) Hutchins, Michelle Landers, David (Rachel) Johnson and Cody Raulston; eight great-grandchildren, Lindsey, Nick and Brandon Hutchins, Jake and Zach Landers, Davin, Tesla and Chloe Johnson; several nieces and nephews.

ATHENS — Donald “Eddie” Halcomb, 57, died Thursday, May 1, 2008, at Athens Regional Medical Center.

Richard Little

NASHVILLE — Richard “Pete” McRae Little, 47, passed away at his home on Wednesday, April 30, 2008.

Pete was a 1979 graduate of Chattanooga Valley High School, in Flintstone, Ga. He moved to Nashville, in 1983, and was a long time employee at Sweet ‘n’ Sassy Bakery, in Madison, and at Smith Brothers Car Wash, in Hendersonville.

He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Little; brother, Phil Little; nephew, Ben Jordan; and grandparents, Hobson and Mary McRae.

He is survived by his loving mother, Faye McRae Little; one brother, Wayne Little (Tonda); sisters, Deborah Stevens and Robin Little; nieces, Stephanie Watson and Misty Steinhurst; nephew, Phillip Little; a special favorite uncle, Mac McRae and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

A memorial service to honor his life will be held on Saturday, May 3, at 2 p.m. EDT.

Oscar Barton

TRENTON — Oscar Lee Barton, 72, departed this life Thursday May 1, 2008.

He retired from Combustion in Chattanooga, and enjoyed flea marketing, fishing, hunting, sports, traveling and was of the Baptist faith.

Oscar was a loving husband, father, brother and a devoted grandfather. He was the best papaw ever.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Dorothy Barton; and sister, Othel Blevins; brothers-in-law, Kenneth Gray and Buddy Clark and Donald Ellis.

Survivors include his loving wife of 52 years. CHICKAMAUGA — Robbie Marie “Bet” Pemberton Burton, 78, passed away Wednesday, April 30, 2008.

A native of Jackson County, Ala., she had lived most of her life in Chattanooga and the past 12 years in Chickamauga. Mrs. Burton was a member of Bethel Baptist Church where she sang in the choir and was employed for many years at Mountain Creek Elementary School and Pro-Golf in North Chattanooga.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dee Earl Burton; and parents, Roy and Mildred Pemberton.

Survivors include her children, Delaine Burton, Knoxville, Kathy Housley, Chickamauga, Wendell Burton, Rossville, Alfred Burton, Rainsville, Ala., Alvin Burton, Ringgold, Anthony Burton, Chattanooga and Eddie Burton, of Etowah, Tenn.; brothers, Pete Pemberton, Lookout Mountain and Ronald Pemberton, Chattanooga Valley; sisters, Wanda Pemberton, Florida, Rose Mae Dutton, Elberton, Ga. and Ruth Lester, Flintstone; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews also survive.

CHICKAMAUGA — Hazel Ruth Cooper, 91, went home to be with Jesus on Wednesday, April 30, 2008.

She lived in the North Georgia area for all her adult life. She was a devout Christian and a member of the Church of God. Hazel was a seamstress who made beautiful clothes for her daughters, granddaughters and friends.

She loved to bake and was known for the special birthday cakes and pies she baked for her children, grandchildren, friends and neighbors she dearly loved.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Cooper; and grandson, Gary Dale Ford; brothers, Clyde, DeForest and Delmas Peeler.

She is survived by daughters, Helen Weaver, Centre, Ala., Betty J. She was a lifelong resident of Trenton, she was a member of New Vision Church of God, she enjoyed quilting and reading. She was a wonderful caregiver and retired from Davis School lunchroom.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Frances Avans West; and husband, Floyd Daniel; sisters, Cora Burrell, Maudie Bodenhammer, Viola Reeves and Anna Bell West; brothers, Noah, Willis, Matthew, Calvin and Claudie West.

Denton Manery

ROSSVILLE — Denton Duane Manery, 42, departed this life Thursday, May 1, 2008, at his home.

Duane was a member of Light House of the Word Church in Rossville.

Survivors include his loving wife, Kathy Manery, of Rossville; father and stepmother, Johnny and Wanda Manery; mother, Lottie Manery; sister and brother-in-law, Carla and Leonard Hicks; nephew, Jesse Hicks; niece, Jennifer Hicks, all of Ringgold; and two aunts and one uncle.

Services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, May 5, 2008, in the chapel with the Rev. Mike Lowery and the Rev. Randy Hale officiating.

Family will receive friends all day Saturday and Sunday.

Arrangements are by W.L. Wilson and Sons Funeral Home, Fort Oglethorpe.

Curtis Thompson

DALTON — Curtis Lee “Captain Curt” Thompson, 65, passed away Thursday, April 24, 2008.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mountain Ridge Baptist Church with Dr. Jerry Jones officiating.

Interment in West Hill Cemetery.

Arrangements are by Willis Funeral Home, Dalton.

Viola Cooley

RAINSVILLE — Viola Cooley, 87, died Wednesday, April 30, 2008, at DeKalb Regional Medical Center.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. CDT today, May 2, from Straight Creek Church of God.

Burial will follow in adjoining cemetery.

Carl Harris

ODENVILLE — Carl E. Harris, 78, passed away Tuesday, April 29, 2008.

He was born to the late Joe and Nellie Hinson in Murfreesboro, Tenn. He worked as a draftsman/engineer, was a member of the Masons, and was of the Baptist faith.

He was also preceded in death by his son, Ernie Harris; sisters, Adell Harris and Carlene Proctor; brothers, Wayne and Elmer Harris.

Survivors include his wife, Cathryn Goodner Harris; children, Pat McNabb, Joe Raymer, Carolyn Elrod, Vickie Harris, Ronnie Harris, Elizabeth Adams and Donna Schneider; sister, Betty Clady; brothers, J.D. and Homer Harris; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held 12:30 p.m. EDT today, May 2, 2008, at Chattanooga National Cemetery with Minister Hugh Glaze officiating.

Family will receive friends from 10 a.m.-noon today at the funeral home prior to departing for the funeral service.

Wanda Ogle

VALLEY HEAD — Wanda Ogle, 65, died Thursday, May 1, 2008.

Survivors: son, Ray Ogle; daughter, Sherry Sanders; brother, Frank Kirby Jr.; two grandchildren; sister, Mae Hunt.

Graveside service 1 p.m. CDT today at Bankhead Cemetery.

Visitation today 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. CDT at Burt Funeral Home, Valley Head.
