Officials call off search for bear sighted in Chattanooga

by Jacqueline Koch

Several people reported seeing a bear in the area of Rossville Boulevard and 37th Avenue early this morning, police and wildlife officials said.

Members of the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency began searching for the bear this morning, but called off the search after police stopped receiving calls about 4:30 a.m., said Matt Majors, Hamilton County Wildlife Officer for the TWRA.

Officers had taken a trap and tranquilizer gun in case they discovered the bear, he said.

“None of us were ever able to find it,” Officer Majors said. “But people could see it really well and identify it.”

David Carroll, 47, who lives on Fifth Avenue near the sighting, said he had not seen the bear but was told about it by a neighbor.

“It probably got out of the mountains to come to get food,” Mr. Carroll said. “My dogs would let me know if it was here.”
