Marion forces decisive 6-AA final

Staff Reports

With two wins Tuesday, the Marion County baseball team forced a second District 6-AA final.

The Warriors defeated Notre Dame 3-2 in the losers-bracket final at Hixson, then avenged an earlier loss to the host Wildcats with an eight-inning 14-10 victory.

Marion County and Hixson will play again today at 6 to determine the champion.

Against Notre Dame, Jake Morgan’s two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning put the Warriors on top. Marion County trailed Hixson 10-8 heading into the seventh inning, but Zephan Guyear tied the game on a sacrifice fly.

In the eighth inning, the Warriors scored four runs — three of them on RBI walks — to win the game. Justin Bell scored four runs, and Sam Griswold finished with four RBIs.

n District 6-A: At Lookout Valley, Arts & Sciences beat Whitwell 6-2 in the losers-bracket final, advancing to the championship game against Lookout Valley tonight at 6. The Patriots’ Zach Phillips earned the pitching win with 14 strikeouts and had two RBIs in the victory.

n District 5-AA: Scott Moses’ two-run double gave McMinn Central the lead for good in its 7-4 losers-bracket final win over Boyd-Buchanan after Colby Williams’ single tied the game at 4. The Chargers will play Polk County for the title today.

n District 5-AAA: At Cleveland, McMinn County edged Cleveland 6-4 for a spot in today’s championship game against Bradley Central. Tanner Quirk went 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Cherokees, and Will Matthews and Bailey Turner each had two hits.

n Division II East District: At Baylor, McCallie defeated the Red Raiders 8-3 in the second game of the best-of-three series, and the rivals will play again today at 5 to determine the district champion. Alex Burd led the Blue Tornado with a 3-for-5 performance that included three RBIs and three doubles.
