Hamilton County Commissioners again defer tax freeze decision

by Matt Wilson

A Hamilton County Commission committee tasked with determining how or if to implement a tax freeze for senior citizens decided today to take a few more weeks to make a decision.

Commissioner Curtis Adams, chairman of the committee, scheduled another meeting in about two weeks.

Commissioners struggled with complications they have found in a state-approved program that allows the commission to freeze taxes at current levels for seniors over 65 and who make less than $32,890 this year.

Commissioner Bill Hullander suggested matching a state tax relief program, but questions arose as to how that program would be administered. Also, that program would include fewer people, Commissioner Fred Skillern pointed out.

That program is for seniors who $24,790 or less per year.
