Hixson slips past Meigs
Though their softball season was possibly six outs from suddenly being over, there was still an air of confidence in the Hixson Lady Wildcats.
Trailing visiting Meigs County entering the bottom of the sixth inning of the Region 3-AA semifinals, Hixson used a pair of doubles and some daring baserunning to score the tying and go-ahead runs and end the Lady Tigers’ season instead, 2-1.
Hixson will host Chattanooga Christian in the region final Wednesday. The Lady Chargers beat Sweetwater 2-0 in the other semifinal.
“We’re a fighting team and this bunch knows we’re going to fight until the end,” said Hixson senior shortstop Porscha Johnson, who played an integral part in the winning rally. “I don’t really think we were too worried. We just had to finish an inning.”
Until the sixth, the Lady Wildcats (18-4) squandered several good scoring opportunities, including leaving runners at second and third in the third inning. And when Meigs scored a run in the fourth when Ashley Shaver stole second and third before scoring on a throwing error, the tension started to grow in the home stands.
Meigs pitcher Jordan Scott retired the Lady Wildcats in order in the fourth and fifth innings, but Hixson showed its resiliency in the sixth. Ruth Blowe got her third hit of the game, a leadoff double, and Johnson laced a double to left-center to tie the game and went to third on a groundout from Whitney Galloway. She then made the play of the game by scoring on a very shallow fly ball to left off the bat of Jeneueve Cena. For Johnson, there was no doubt she was going.
“Coach (Janet) Tate told me to go if it’s a fly ball, so, when I saw it was a fly ball, I went back and tagged,” said Johnson, who slid just under Kirstie Jennings’ tag attempt. “I knew it was going to be close, but I wasn’t stopping.”
Pitcher Dawon Millwood made the lead hold up, retiring Meigs’ Nos. 3, 4 and 5 batters to complete a two-hitter with 12 strikeouts.
“Dawon was solid again,” Tate said. “And the girls were pretty solid behind her. We hit the ball well tonight — not with a lot of power, but we had some solid shots. Ruth and Porscha really came through in the sixth. Meigs is a good team, and so is Chattanooga Christian, so we can’t afford to get complacent.”
n Chattanooga Christian 2, Sweetwater 0: At Sweetwater, Jennifer Long drove in the Lady Chargers’ runs with her first-inning single, then threw a no-hitter. Two Lady Wildcats reached base, one on a walk and one on an error.
Courtney Hitchcock started the game with a double and went 3-for-4. She and Laura Curtis, who walked, scored the runs.
