Chattanooga: Baylor girls end GPS run

Hannah Jumper was simply following her coach’s instructions. Jumper and Baylor School teammate Mary Shelton Bryant had been told to set a pace together and not worry about anyone else.

Pushed by her teammate, Jumper broke her personal best in the 800-meter run by nearly three seconds. Bryant finished a close second and the Lady Red Raiders won their first Division II-East sectional championship in five years.

Friday was the conclusion of the D-II sectional, which had been postponed by rain Thursday. The event began with field events Tuesday and concluded with running events at GPS. Baylor ended GPS’s reign 126-94, while the McCallie boys won their fourth straight outright sectional title, beating second-place Baylor 136-95.

“I felt really good today, and running with Mary Shelton was just awesome,” Jumper said. “Coach (Bill) McMahan told us to run together and we would be fine. But I had no idea my time would be that good.”

Only the winner of each event automatically qualifies for next week’s Spring Fling. The others must hope for an at-large berth, determined by comparative scores from the middle and western portions of the state.

Baylor won six girls’ events, including three of the relays, and also had the top three in the 400.

“You always worry about the relays even when you feel like you’re pretty good there,” McMahan said. “A lot of things can happen, and I was holding my breath hoping for no mistakes or dropped batons. But today they all ran really well. I think we got the maximum out of everybody.”

Malena Kellerman, who had already qualified for the state in the shot put and pentathlon, blistered the field in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.05 to set a meet record. Other meet records were set by Baylor’s Bill Matthews with a 4:16.80 in the 1600 and McCallie’s relay team of Rico Henderson, Reggie Poindexter, D.J. Cochran and Evan Ellison, who covered the event in 42.59 seconds.

Ellison also won the 100 and 400 and was second in the 200, his final event.

“This is the first meet back for me after I had a hamstring injury a couple of weeks ago,” Ellison said. “I’m pretty in tune with my body, and I never felt right today. I felt tired — especially in the 200. But we should have a lot of guys qualify for next week, and I’m excited about what we can do as a team.”

McCallie won three events and finished second in three others. Baylor’s Wesley Idlette, who already qualified in the decathlon, added titles in the 110 and 300 hurdles.
