Chattanooga: Shocked Raiders rebound

Shocked. Stunned. Embarrassed.

Those were just three of the words used by players and coaches to describe Baylor’s 15-1 loss to Father Ryan in the first game of their Division II-AA sub-state baseball doubleheader Friday at Baylor.

That the Red Raiders rebounded to rout the Irish in game two, 17-5, reveals something about the team’s resolve, according to coach Gene Etter.

“That first game was a shocker to us,” the veteran coach said with a shake of his head. “I can’t remember getting beat that badly, and because we had our top pitcher going made it even more unbelievable. But we did turn it around. The guys realized that second game was do-or-die, and they responded.”

The deciding game of the series will be played today at noon at Baylor.

Father Ryan (22-13) roughed up Baylor ace Tyler Massey for nine earned runs in three innings. Massey entered the game 9-0 with an earned run average of 0.87. By all rights, Baylor (30-6) should have trailed no worse than 4-0 entering the fourth, but an error turned a three-run second inning into four runs, and a miscue in the third really did the Raiders in.

With two on and two out, Massey struck out Mitchell Burns, but his sharp-breaking curveball got in the dirt and went to the backstop, allowing one run to score. Cole Gobbell followed with a two-run double, Justin Guidry hit an RBI single and Drew Brown belted a two-run homer to make it 10-0.

A five-run fifth, highlighted by homers from Joe Seul and pinch-hitter Richard Howden, only added injury to insult.

Father Ryan’s Guidry, a lefty who is headed to Middle Tennessee State University, allowed five hits in five innings, striking out five and using a screwball to handcuff the usually potent Baylor batters.

“That made it even worse, the fact that we couldn’t get anything going,” Etter said. “It was not a good combination.”

Though game two ended in a rout, it had its tense moments for the Raiders, who came out ready for vengeance against Irish starter Brown. Dylan Craig led off with a double, Massey exacted a bit of revenge with an RBI triple and Andy Shuford made it 2-0 with a single. Two errors and James Feher’s RBI single led to two more runs for a quick 5-0 lead.

For starting pitcher Chase Reimer, the runs were a blessing.

“It relaxed a lot of the pressure that was on me,” he said. “I knew after that I didn’t have to be perfect.”

Though he allowed just five hits in the six-inning complete game, he needed all those first-inning runs after Dylan Gladden’s fourth-inning grand slam made it 5-4. The Raiders gave Reimer more cushion with a five-run fifth inning, which included a two-run homer from Will Stansell and a three-run shot from Craig. Baylor put an exclamation on the rout in the sixth with seven runs, highlighted by Reimer’s three-run double.

Zeth Stone lead the 19-hit effort with four hits, and Craig, Shuford and Feher added three each. Stansell and Reimer drove in three runs apiece.

“That first game, we kind of felt embarrassed as a team,” said Reimer (7-0). “I felt like I needed to step up and help the team. I knew I would get some run support, and I got great run support. Now we’ve got to go out and do it again tomorrow.”
