Jasper: Four-run fifth has Warriors in state
JASPER, Tenn. — Jimmy Buffett’s “Margaritaville” blared over the speakers at Al Raffo Field Saturday night, but Marion County baseball fans have another destination on their minds.
With a gutsy 4-2 victory over Upperman in a Class AA sectional, the Warriors will return to Murfreesboro a second consecutive year for the Spring Fling state tournament.
“When we got the last out, it was indescribable,” said Warriors senior pitcher Justin Bell, who went the distance, scattering seven hits and striking out nine to improve to 9-0.
Marion set a school record with its 32nd win.
For four innings the return to the Fling was in doubt as Upperman pitcher Michael Taylor kept Marion’s bats silent and nursed a 1-0 lead. The Bees had taken the lead when Ethan Christian blasted a home run on the second pitch of the game and appeared ready to add insurance in the top of the fifth with the bases loaded and one out. But Marion left fielder Ben Murphy caught a sharply hit fly from Jared Wilson and fired a strike to second base for an inning-ending double play.
“That was the turning point right there,” Warriors junior shortstop Joe Muir said. “We got pretty fired up after that.”
Muir jumped on the first pitch he saw to lead off the bottom of the fifth, homering over the left-field fence and kick-starting a four-run rally. That was the first hit allowed by Taylor, who was lifted one batter later after a walk. Blake Fowler followed with an RBI single to put the Warriors ahead, and Zephan Guyear added a two-out, two-run single.
The Warriors (32-8-1) got all three of their hits in the inning.
“(Taylor) had been throwing first-pitch fastballs a lot, so that’s what I went up looking for,” Muir said. “I think that really got the momentum going for us.
Two errors in the seventh allowed one Upperman run to score, but with runners at first and third, Bell struck out Johnny Miller to end the game.
“Justin Bell has really become a very tough pitcher,” Warriors coach Steven Roberts said. “I wouldn’t put anybody else out there in that situation. When everything is on the line, he’s our guy.
“He had to battle in the seventh. We kicked it around and put ourselves in a bad spot, but he refocused and got us out of it.”
