U.S. Rep. Nathan Deal, R-Ga. was leading Tuesday night over Democratic challenger Jeff Scott, early results show, and the Associated Press has named him the winner.

Rep. Deal, 66, was first elected to Congress in 1992 as a Democrat. He switched parties to the GOP in 1995.

Mr. Scott, 35, and Rep. Deal are competing to represent Georgia’s 9th Congressional District, which covers Georgia’s Northwest corner.

ELECTION RESULTS

U.S. House, GA District 9

With 197 of 252 precincts reporting:

* Nathan Deal (R): 125,026

* Jeff Scott (D): 44,461
