Chattanooga: Doctors say toddler who was killed suffered from severe child abuse

The doctors who treated an 18-month-old girl who died two years ago testified in court today that she suffered from severe child abuse.

Dr. Thomas Bruns said the child was “severely abused” and suffered from a shaken traumatic event that led to her death.

The doctors testified this morning in the ongoing trial of the baby’s mother’s ex-boyfriend, Brian Rutherford, who is charged with felony murder and aggravated child abuse in the death of Sierra Carpenter.

The mother, Traci Carpenter, is also charged with felony aggravated child neglect.

She is expected to testify against Mr. Rutherford either this afternoon or tomorrow.
