With senior tailback Matthew Polk wearing the bull’s-eye, Ooltewah zeroed in on other targets Friday night.
Brady Reed threw two second-quarter touchdown passes and the Owls’ defense dominated the first half in a 38-12 win over Campbell County in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs.
Campbell County (5-6) loaded up its defensive front to try to slow Polk, who ran for 24 touchdowns in the regular season and averaged 239 yards in his last three games.
“They had everybody in there,” Owls coach Benny Monroe said. “That’s why I went to the spread (offense). They made us throw and we like to throw, so that was OK. We’re capable of being whatever we need to be.”
Polk still rolled up 144 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries, and his four straight runs to start Ooltewah’s opening drive set up a 32-yard scoring run by fullback Brandon Bruell.
Star: Ooltewah QB Brady Reed was 6-of-11 and threw two second-half touchdown passes.
Up next: Ooltewah (9-1) will host Soddy-Daisy next Friday in a rematch of an Oct. 31 game the Owls won 55-21.
Ooltewah’s smothering defense held the Cougars to one first down and 61 yards in the first half. The defense put the Owls up 14-0 when end Kevin Adams intercepted a screen pass and returned it 20 yards.
“We just got in the backfield every play and messed up everything,” said Adams, whose interception was set up by pressure from Que Jackson and Jaquez Smith. “I read screen, so I just dropped back, caught the ball and took it in.”
Reed pushed the halftime lead to 28-0 by getting the ball in the hands of his other weapons.
Wide receiver Sammy Seamster broke a tackle on a short curl route and outran the secondary for a 56-yard touchdown. Reed then dropped one in to Smith, lined up at tight end, for a 27-yard score just before halftime.
“I thought they planned to stop the run,” said Reed, who was 6-of-11 passing for 124 yards and no interceptions. “We spread them out, and when we went back to the run, they couldn’t stop it.”
Polk scored on a 1-yard run midway through the third quarter. Kicker John Long converted five extra points and nailed a 32-yard field goal in the fourth.
