When Heather Parman and Christina Teter took a recruiting visit to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, the high school volleyball standouts didn’t just come away knowing where they wanted to continue their careers.
They found their future college roommates as well.
Parman, a GPS senior outside hitter, and Teter, Red Bank’s senior middle hitter, will become Lady Mocs teammates next season after both signed scholarship papers at their schools Thursday.
“It’s amazing,” Parman said. “When they called to offer me the scholarship, it was one of the biggest moments I’ve ever had. I really wanted to play for UTC, and it all fell into place.”
Parman also shared setting duties this season, when she helped lead GPS to its second straight Division II state championship, but said her primary role with the Lady Mocs will be as an outside hitter.
Teter, who helped bring Red Bank to this year’s Class AAA state final four, expects to continue playing in the middle.
“I just enjoy playing the game,” she said. “It’s exciting knowing that I get to play at the level, and that I’ve finally signed so I get to enjoy the rest of my senior year.”
Teter’s dominant senior season included 474 kills and 155 blocks for the Lady Lions, who won district and region championships before advancing to the state tournament.
“When the game was on the line, she consistently came through for us all season long,” Red Bank coach Christel Helton said. “It was amazing to watch her take over a game that way. Not many players can do that.
“She was always athletic, but she’s really worked at her volleyball skills and blossomed into the dominant player she is. We’re very proud of her.”
Parman was an equally powerful hitter for the Bruisers this season, finishing the year with more than 700 kills and a spot on the all-state tournament team.
“Heather is very intense and driven to win,” GPS coach Paul Brock said. “She strives to dominate, and she’s been a driving force in our offense. She’s a force to be reckoned with, and I think she’ll have a ton of success at the next level.”
Both Parman and Teter have played for Brock’s Choo-Choo City volleyball club, but when the two become teammates for the first time on his 18s team this season, it could provide a preview of what’s in store for UTC the next four years.
“Both are Division I players that I think can have an immediate impact,” Brock said. “They’ll get their chemistry going this winter, and it should be outstanding.”
