Opportunities for volunteers

AMEDISYS HOSPICE

Patient assistance: Volunteers needed to sit with patients. Free group or individual training available. 499-0018.

AMERICAN RED CROSS

Hospital Volunteers: Time commitment of one day a week at area hospitals. 265-3455, ext. 125

HUMANE EDUCATIONAL SOCIETY

Pet Socialization: Volunteer spends one-on-one time with shelter animals to exercise, play and love them.

Pet Therapy: Volunteer accompanies pets to assisted-living homes for visits with residents. 624-5302, ext. 228.

MCKAMEY ANIMAL CARE AND ADOPTION CENTER

Cat & Dog Caregivers: Volunteers socialize with animals, show them love and attention, and exercise puppies or older dogs in the play yards.

Fostering: Volunteers open their homes to foster a dog, cat, kittens or pups for an overnight stay or until adopted.

Transportation: Volunteers take animals to adoption centers, rescue organizations or other centers that have made requests for particular breeds.

Adoption: Volunteers assist with animal handling and presentation at local pet stores that sponsor weekend adoptions.

All volunteers must attend an orientation class, which is held at the McKamey Center every two weeks. www.mckameyanimalcenter.org, 305-6500.

PARTNERSHIP FOR FAMILIES, CHILDREN AND ADULTS

Hot-line Volunteers: Volunteers 18 and older needed to take calls for the 24-hour Crisis Hotline, including domestic violence and sexual assault calls from victims in need of help. Training continues this week. May work from home.

Development Intern: Volunteer needed five to 15 hours per week to assist with fundraising and marketing. 697-3830

Social Media Outreach Volunteer: Volunteer familiar with various social networking mediums needed to promote programs and events of the Partnership. Volunteer from home or campus. Call 697-3830

READ CHATTANOOGA INC.

Tutors: Volunteers needed to work one-on-one with nonreaders, training included in Laubach method; volunteers needed in Adult Ed classrooms to work with students who need extra help in math and reading; individuals to assist/monitor students in the computer lab, training included.

Office Assistant/Receptionist: Individual needed to answer phones, greet visitors, assist tutors and students on Thursdays from 5 to 8 p.m.

Readmobile Assistants: Volunteers will assist Readmobile coordinator, read aloud and participate in book-related activities for children up to 10 years in age. 209-6190.

SALVATION ARMY

Adopt an Angel: Angel Trees are in local malls and other areas of business through Dec. 7. Volunteers needed to pick a child or senior adult's angel from tree, purchase suggested items from wish list and return presents to tree location.

Bell Ringers: Volunteers needed until Dec. 24 to ring bells outside local stores at kettle collection points.

Serve a Holiday Meal: Assistance needed Nov. 27 and Dec. 25 to serve hot meals to the hungry or deliver meals to shut-ins.

Stuff a Stocking: Volunteers needed to stuff children's stockings through Dec. 7. Stockings are distributed to children on angel trees. Volunteers may elect to purchase items for stockings and prepare them for distribution. 756-1023.

SAMARITAN CENTER

Barbie Patrol: Groups and individuals needed to groom and dress Barbie dolls and action figures for sale in thrift store.

Toy Preparation: Groups and individuals needed to make sure donated games and puzzles have all pieces before being resold at thrift store.

Prayer Partners: Encourage others through anonymous notes and prayer in the Secret Samaritan prayer program.

Thrift Store Assistance: Individuals needed to sort and process donated items.

Volunteer Coordinator Assistant: Help with secretarial work such as organizing files, making copies and sending out letters. 238-7777, ext. 24.

TRINITY HOSPICE

Caregiver Assistance: Volunteers provide support and companionship to patients with terminal illnesses and their families by writing letters, reading to patients, running errands, baking, yard work or making blankets and lap quilts. Free training, time commitment of one to three hours per week. 892-3737.

UNITED WAY'S VOLUNTEER CENTER

Chattanooga Room in the Inn: Tutors and volunteer art instructors needed to assist at after-school program; age and education requirements apply. Volunteers will work with ages 4-17, as well as staff members and other volunteers. Previous art instruction or other experience preferred. Shifts are Mondays through Thursdays between 3:30 .and 6 p.m., including setup and cleanup. japps@chattanoogaroomintheinn.com or 624-6144.

First-Centenary United Methodist Church, Inner City Ministry: After-school program needs homework tutor, volunteers to read with children, call spelling words or help with research for reports. Hours are 4-6 p.m. Monday-Thursday. 266-3345 or mjackson@fcumc.org.

Foster Grandparent Program: Foster grandparents needed to work 20 hours a week with special-needs children in day-care centers, Head Start programs, hospitals and nonprofit agencies. Shifts are 8 a.m.-noon Monday-Friday. Volunteer must be 60 or older, meet low-income eligibility requirements and reside in either Hamilton, Bradley or McMinn county. 757-5273.

Outdoor Volunteer Club: Single, environmentally aware volunteers meet to do trail and garden maintenance 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, at Pot Point House. Light refreshments around the fire afterward. 653-0091.

Project Homeless Connect: Volunteers needed for first Project Homeless Connect on Thursday, Dec. 4, at Eastgate Town Center, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Opportunities include greeters, gift bag assembly, booth registration, food handlers, event setup and breakdown. Volunteers shifts are 8 a.m. to noon, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., or noon to 4 p.m. kprintz@sedev.org or 643-2328.

Reflection Riding: Weeding group meets each Thursday, 9-11 a.m., to maintain grounds at Riding. 653-0091

Self Care Institute: Volunteers needed for director assistant, traffic directors, VIP greeters, setup/breakout, front office coordinator, luncheon program assistant director, gift bag assembly, caterer assistant, hostesses and photography assistant. 698-7333.

Tennessee River Gorge Trust: Anyone interested in becoming a land steward, willing to volunteer two to four hours twice a month, is invited to a Land Stewardship Volunteer Orientation Session on Monday, Dec. 8, noon-1 p.m., at the Tennessee River Gorge Trust office, 535 Chestnut St., Suite 214. 653-0091.

Walker County CAT Team: Volunteers call on families in Walker County to verify that children living at that address are receiving monthly books from the Ferst Book Foundation and to correct mailing information. (706) 866-5488.
