Tennessee: Fulmer says Coleman will play Saturday

by Wes Rucker

KNOXVILLE — University of Tennessee football coach Phillip Fulmer said redshirt freshman quarterback B.J. Coleman of The McCallie School would play Saturday at Vanderbilt, but that junior Jonathan Crompton would start.

Coleman — who completed 22-of-31 passes for 325 yards Thursday in a junior varsity victory over Hargrave (Va.) Military Academy — said he wasn’t sure how much he’d play.

“But I just really appreciate this tremendous opportunity,” he added.

Berry battles shoulder injury

Sophomore All-America safety candidate Eric Berry has played all season with a shoulder injury, Fulmer said Tuesday afternoon.

Berry leads NCAA Division I with six interceptions this season, and he’s already broken the Southeastern Conference record with 442 career interception return yards.

Fulmer didn’t comment specifically on Berry’s injury, or when it occurred, simply calling it “old.” He added that Berry might need surgery to repair it after the season.

Fulmer’s comments came in response to a lengthy round of questions as to why Berry hasn’t taken more snaps at quarterback this season.
