Snowflakes were spotted in the Scenic City this morning.
According to the National Weather Service snow flurries were officially reported between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. at the airport, with a smattering of isolated reports around the region.
Flakes were also observed falling around 8 a.m. on U.S. 27 North of the Tennessee River and on Martin Luther King Boulevard downtown.
With today’s high expected to reach only 43, there may be a few more flurries around the area later in the day, according to Mike Propst, hydro-meteorological technician at the weather service office in Morristown, Tenn.
“It’s not out of the question,” he said.
Higher elevations in Northeast Tennessee are more likely to see snowfall, he said. Overnight, two inches of snow fell on Mount LeConte, one inch at Newfound Gap and just below an inch at Cade’s Cove, according to weather service reports. Counting last night, there are seven inches of snow on the ground at LeConte, Tennessee’s highest peak at 6,400 feet.
