Bargain hunters could be in for some good shopping at a liquidation sale of 14 truckloads of furniture from Atlanta’s luxury Omni Hotel in the CNN Center.
Lila Wing, a 10-year veteran of the hotel liquidation business, bought the furniture and is selling it at the Liquidation Center at 1910 Mack Smith Road.
From large armoires, priced from $275-$300, bedside tables starting at $30 and headboards from $125, to handsome desks priced at $75, buyers can snap up a piece of hotel history. Mrs. Wingo also purchased bedding, including goose-down comforters, 250-count white flat sheets and bedspread sets.
“You can sleep at the Omni every night,” she joked.
Kimberly Murdock, Omni marketing manager, said about 170 rooms at the downtown hotel were damaged by a tornado last March. Renovation of the damaged rooms is nearly complete.
Mrs. Wingo said the 1,200 items for sale came from the rooms that received some damage.
“Some have a few scratches or nicks,” Mrs. Wingo said. “But most of it is not damaged at all.”
Jane Wilson Grant, interior designer at Artech, an architectural firm in Chattanooga, said hotel liquidation sales offer buyers a chance to take home solid, commercial-quality furniture.
“Commercial furniture has to have more stringent ratings and stand up to wear and tear,” she said.
In today’s economy, many people are looking for affordable alternatives to new furnishings, she added.
“Being able to purchase quality furnishings at an event like this is definitely a good buy,” Ms. Grant said. “And it may be the perfect, interesting piece with some history behind it,” alluding to the early spring twister, the first recorded tornado to hit downtown Atlanta, according to www.weather.com.
Mrs. Wingo expects the sale to last five to six weeks. And, as the Omni sale wraps up, she will begin bringing in furnishings from her next job — bedroom furniture and other pieces from Harrah’s in New Orleans.
