HOW THEY SCORED

SATURDAY’S STAT

Georgia Tech’s 26 third-quarter points were the most Georgia allowed in a quarter since Tennessee scored 27 in the final 15 minutes of its 51-33 win in 2006.

SATURDAY’S STAR

Georgia Tech running back Roddy Jones rushed for 214 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries, with 151 yards in the second half. The Yellow Jackets rushed for 409 yards.

ATHENS, Ga. — Examining the scoring drives from Georgia’s 45-42 loss to Georgia Tech on Saturday:

FIRST QUARTER

GA — Tripp Chandler 1-yard pass from Matthew Stafford (Blair Walsh kick), 11:40. Drive: 8 plays, 66 yards, 3:20.

KEY PLAY: Knowshon Moreno got Georgia going on its opening possession with two runs for 23 yards before Stafford passed to freshman flanker A.J. Green down the middle for 28 to the 1-yard line.

KEY STAT: The Bulldogs reeled off gains of 13, 14, 10 and 28 yards on four of their first five plays.

GEORGIA 7, GEORGIA TECH 0

GT — Morgan Burnett 35-yard interception return (attempt failed), 2:57.

KEY PLAY: Stafford sailed a pass that was intended for a well-covered Michael Moore, and the roving Burnett saw it the whole way and had a direct path to the end zone.

KEY STAT: The interception was the seventh this season by Burnett and the third the Yellow Jackets have returned for a touchdown.

GEORGIA 7, GEORGIA TECH 6

SECOND QUARTER

GA — Mohamed Massaquoi 10-yard pass from Stafford (Walsh kick), 13:36. Drive: 8 plays, 75 yards, 4:13.

KEY PLAY: Three plays after throwing the interception, Stafford adjusted to Tech’s pursuit by throwing a short sidearm pass to Moreno, who ran out to Georgia’s 49-yard line for a 16-yard gain.

KEY STAT: Massaquoi’s score gave the Bulldogs 175 total yards, compared to 47 for the Yellow Jackets.

GEORGIA 14, GEORGIA TECH 6

GT — Lucas Cox 2-yard run (two-point conversion failed), 9:22. Drive: 8 plays, 65 yards, 4:07.

KEY PLAY: After Roddy Jones was stuffed by cornerback Bryan Evans around left end after a 2-yard gain on the drive’s opening play, Jones went around right end on the ensuing snap and raced 36 yards to Georgia’s 27. Evans stumbled and could not get out on the perimeter in time, resulting in the open lane for Jones.

KEY STAT: All eight plays on Tech’s scoring drive occurred via the run.

GEORGIA 14, GEORGIA TECH 12

GA — Massaquoi 49-yard pass from Stafford (Walsh kick), 7:00. Drive: 5 plays, 76 yards, 2:15.

KEY PLAY: Massaquoi made a 23-yard reception on the drive’s second play, and on the TD he split two defenders on a slant, ran through a tackle attempt by cornerback Dominique Reese and raced the final 40 yards.

KEY STAT: Massaquoi accounted for 62 of the drive’s 76 yards with his two receptions.

GEORGIA 21, GEORGIA TECH 12

GA — Massaquoi 3-yard pass from Stafford (Walsh kick), 0:37. Drive: 6 plays, 56 yards, 0:46.

KEY PLAY: Massaquoi and Green had first-down receptions, but the big gain was a 26-yard screen from Stafford to fullback Shaun Chapas to the Tech 3.

KEY STAT: Massaquoi’s third receiving touchdown of the game tied a school record, most recently accomplished by Terrence Edwards at Kentucky in 2002.

GEORGIA 28, GEORGIA TECH 12

THIRD QUARTER

GT — Jonathan Dwyer 60-yard run (Dwyer run), 14:48. Drive: 1 play, 60 yards, 0:12.

KEY PLAY: After Walsh’s second-half kickoff sailed out of bounds to give Tech possession at its 40-yard line, Dwyer went around right end and bolted down the sideline for the score. Georgia linebacker Dannell Ellerbe failed to wrap him up.

KEY STAT: The 60-yarder followed a first half in which Dwyer had 37 yards on nine carries.

GEORGIA 28, GEORGIA TECH 20

GT — Jones 8-yard run (Josh Nesbitt run), 8:11. Drive: 10 plays, 56 yards, 5:25.

KEY PLAY: On fourth-and-1 from Georgia’s 24-yard line, Nesbitt kept it for a yard and the first down.

KEY STAT: Dwyer had three carries for 12 yards on the drive, going over the 100-yard mark for the ninth time this season.

GEORGIA 28, GEORGIA TECH 28

GT — Dwyer 23-yard run (Scott Blair kick), 7:55. Drive: 1 play, 23 yards, 0:07.

KEY PLAY: Dwyer went up the middle and cut right, leaving cornerback Ramarcus Brown on the ground. The score came a play after Georgia’s Richard Samuel fumbled the kickoff return.

KEY STAT: Georgia Tech’s 23-0 run was the worst quarter of the season for the Bulldogs.

GEORGIA TECH 35, GEORGIA 28

GT — Scott Blair 28-yard field goal, 1:14. Drive: 7 plays, 76 yards, 4:19.

KEY PLAY: On third-and-4 from the Tech 19, Nesbitt went right on the option and pitched to Jones, who benefited from a blown defensive assignment and raced 62 yards down the sideline to Georgia’s 19.

KEY STAT: The run by Jones put both him and Dwyer over 100 yards for the game.

GEORGIA TECH 38, GEORGIA 28

FOURTH QUARTER

GA — Moreno 32-yard run (Walsh kick), 10:23. Drive: 4 plays, 41 yards, 1:16.

KEY PLAY: After a pair of Stafford keepers went for no gain and resulted in fourth-and-1, Moreno ran over the left side to daylight, giving Georgia fans their first reason to cheer in the second half.

KEY STAT: Moreno’s touchdown run was his longest since a 68-yard score Oct. 25 at LSU.

GEORGIA TECH 38, GEORGIA 35

GT — Jones 54-yard run (Blair kick), 7:13. Drive: 6 plays, 70 yards, 3:03.

KEY PLAY: On the touchdown, Jones took a third-and-7 option pitch from Nesbitt, shook off a John Knox tackle and blew by a bad tackle attempt by Reshad Jones before racing down the right sideline.

KEY STAT: The Yellow Jackets tallied 45 points despite Nesbitt being 1-of-6 passing with an interception.

GEORGIA TECH 45, GEORGIA 35

GA — Green 12-yard pass from Stafford (Walsh kick), 4:04. Drive: 9 plays, 72 yards, 3:04.

KEY PLAY: Stafford got the drive going with a 23-yard screen pass to Moreno and had a 23-yard completion to Massaquoi.

KEY STAT: The passing touchdown was Stafford’s fifth of the game, tying a record set by David Greene (LSU in 2004) and matched by D.J. Shockley (Boise State in 2005).
