Chattanooga: Lady Trojans pin loss and a shutout on CCS

Soddy-Daisy came into its girls’ soccer match Thursday night having recorded seven straight shutouts, but the Lady Trojans knew that no team had been able to shut out unbeaten Chattanooga Christian this season.

After 80 minutes, the clear advantage went to Soddy-Daisy’s defense, which limited host CCS to two shots on goal in a 3-0 victory.

“They’ve played together a long time as a starting unit,” Soddy-Daisy coach Moises Drumond said of his back four, “and it’s really paying dividends for us.”

The Lady Chargers were without two of their defenders and suffered another key loss in the opening minutes. Senior forward Logan Mays, whose goals were the difference in a win over Soddy-Daisy last year and a tie with the Lady Trojans in 2006, left the game with what trainers believe is a broken wrist.

“It was kind of a demoralizing blow,” CCS coach Cal Sneller said. “Logan has been a thorn in their sides the past two years, but they have a great defense. This was a good test for us.”

Soddy-Daisy (11-1) got on the board in the 36th minute when Claire Lanter connected on a corner kick from Hannah Jenkins, and the Lady Trojans ended the first half without allowing a CCS shot.

“I thought the intensity was good, but our passes weren’t connecting for the first 20 minutes,” Drumond said. “After that, the passes started hitting where they were intended, and that sped up our play.”

The Lady Trojans withstood some CCS pressure early in the second half, and 11 minutes into the period, Jenkins scored off a pass from Liz Geier. Before CCS (10-1-1) had time to recover, Soddy-Daisy had connected again, this time on a cross from Jenkins to Katie Hillis.

“It was 1-0, and then those two goals came so close together,” Drumond said. “Getting that third one so quickly really helped us out. The girls did a great job getting numbers up to try and finish chances.”

Soddy-Daisy keepers Laura Lee Clark and Haley Myers shared the shutout, while Leah Wilson made six saves as the Lady Chargers took their first loss of the season.

“They don’t like the pain of losing, but I think it’s probably good to feel that a little,” Sneller said. “Soddy-Daisy is a very good team.”
