Baylor’s Davidson earns national honor
Baylor senior goalkeeper Taylor Davidson was named by ESPN.com as the national girls’ high school soccer player of the week following a 2-0 win over Germantown Houston last week. The shutout was the seventh of the season for Davidson and the Lady Red Raiders, who are 10-0-1 heading into Tuesday’s matchup with Division II East rival GPS.
Baylor currently holds the No. 11 spot in the ESPNRise Fab 50 national rankings and is ranked first in Tennessee’s Division II coaches’ poll. Baylor is second in the state’s overall poll behind Brentwood, which is 25th in the ESPN poll.
Murphy number retired
Grace Academy honored former baseball player Brendan Murphy by retiring his number during halftime of Friday night’s homecoming football game against Lookout Valley.
Murphy was drafted by the Montreal Expos after graduating from Grace in 2003 as a high-school All-American and state Gatorade Player of the Year, but he chose instead to play two years of junior college baseball. He then continued his career at Marshall University and signed with the Kalamazoo Kings of the Independent Professional League, where he was voted the 2008 Rookie of the Year and was the only first-year player selected to this season’s all-star game.
