Tennessee: Monday last day to register to vote Nov. 4

Tennessee and Georgia voters who want to vote in the Nov. 4 general election must register before 4 p.m. Monday.

Applications delivered in person must be in the hands of the respective election boards by that time, and those mailing applications must have their letters postmarked Monday.

Alabama’s deadline to register is Oct. 24.

So far, Hamilton County’s Election Commission has been flooded with applications, said Charlotte Mullis-Morgan, chief deputy for the commission.

More than 12,000 new voters have registered in Hamilton County since December 2007, Ms. Mullis-Morgan said.

There are now 197,700 registered voters in the county. In December 2007, there were 185,599 voters, records show.

“It’s just really been busy here,” Ms. Mullis-Morgan said. “It’s been wild this year.”

Voters can check their registration status and find their nearest poll ing place on the Hamilton County Election Commission’s Web site — elect.hamiltontn.gov.

Many of the new applications came from groups that have gone out to register new voters, officials said. Democrats and Republicans have been active in voter registration drives, as have other groups such as Dalton, Ga.’s Coalition of Latino Leaders.

America Gruner, founder of Latino Leaders, reported that her volunteers have registered more than 200 voters — mostly Latinos, she said. Ms. Gruner said the group was diligent in making sure everyone registered was a U.S. citizen.

“A lot of people, when we first approached them, weren’t interested because they didn’t think their votes would count,” Ms. Gruner said. “But then we explained to them how important the issues are ... only about 20 percent said no.”
