Nick Cannon drained the match-winning putt over Baylor last Thursday.
The McCallie senior made a more dramatic shot Monday to lead the Blue Tornado to the Division II East/Middle Region tournament championship at Champions Run Golf Course in Rockvale, Tenn.
Cannon holed out with a 58-degree wedge from about 20 on No. 18 lifting McCallie to a total of 282, two strokes better than Baylor and 18 shots better than third-place Battle Ground Academy.
“Before I teed off, Jacob (Everts) told me to just go ahead and make eagle,” said Cannon, who shot an even-par 72. “I hit a high flop shot that landed six feet from the hole, and it hit the flag and went in.
“I didn’t realize it meant much until all my teammates started cheering real loud.”
Fellow senior Everts earned medalist honors with a smooth 65 that included eight birdies. He was 8 under through 12 holes.
“A coach came and told me that, and I thought, ‘I’ve got to go see this,’” McCallie coach Tony Meyers said. “I think he got a little tense toward the end because he had a chance to go real deep.”
The 65 is a personal best for Everts, who has not settled on a college. He made seven consecutive birdies Monday.
“I hit the ball well all day, and my irons were the big thing,” Everts said. “I hit 16 greens and I was close enough to make some putts.”
GPS won the girls’ region title by one stroke over Baylor, 140-141, with junior Jordan Britt claiming medalist honors with a 4-under 68. Mary Alice Murphy added a 72 for the Bruisers.
“I waited until I got off the course to jump up and down,” GPS coach Ryan Kopet said. “To be specific, I was in the bathroom by myself.”
Baylor junior Sofia Hoglund shot a 69 and senior Morgan McQuary shot a 72. Both bogeyed No. 18.
“Mama said there would be days like this,” Baylor coach King Oehmig said. “The main thing was to advance and we did, but that’s a hard way to lose.”
